2. Thomas Cobb, author of four novels, including Crazy Heart, which was adapted into a major motion picture, will discuss his work at the Mary Tefft White Cultural Center at Roger Williams University today at 4:30 p.m. A Rhode Island resident, Cobb is retired from a long career as a faculty member at Rhode Island College, where he also directed its creative writing program for 18 years. Cobb, a Rhode Island resident, grew up in Arizona, the setting of his new novel, With Blood in Their Eyes.

4. This day in history, Oct. 23, 2004: A powerful earthquake and its aftershocks hit Niigata prefecture, northern Japan, killing 35 people, injuring 2,200, and leaving 85,000 homeless or evacuated. Seven years later, a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Van Province, Turkey, killing 582 people and injuring thousands.
