Bike Path Creator Dies

George Redman was instrumental in creating the state bike path system, which continues to spread.

A local hero in transportation whose work continues to transform how people get around — particularly on the East Bay — died last week, reports the Providence Journal.

George Redman, considered the father of the state bicycle path system, died Thursday, according to the state Department of Transportation, which worked closely with Redman.

Redman was a key figure in creating the East Bay Bike Path, the state's first to pass through multiple towns. It runs more than 14 miles, from India Point Park in Providence to Independence Park in Bristol.

The new linear park across the Seekonk River in Providence is named for Redman, who was also honored in November at the State House by Governor Chafee and other officials.
