STAAND Dedicates Prom to Justin Nunes

The Substance Abuse Task Force and STAAND students hosted a pre-prom dinner early in March to announce that students would stay drug free on prom night to honor the deceased Justin Nunes.

Mt. Hope Students, led by the school group STAAND (Students Taking Action Against Negative Decisions), are taking a pledge to stay drug and alcohol free on prom night in honor of a former student.

"Justin Nunes never got a chance to go to his prom, so I am making a prom promise to have a drug free prom in honor of Justin," said Jordan Farley, a STAAND member.

Jusin Nunes was a local resident and should have graduated from Mt. Hope High School with the class of 2004. But in 2003, Nunes was killed in a street racing accident on Metacom Avenue in Bristol. Police say Nunes was thrown from the car in the accident and pronounced dead on the scene.

More than 100 students, parents and members of the Substance Abuse Task Force attended the annual Pre-Prom Dinner held at on Thursday, March 15, supporting the drug and alcohol free prom promise.

Members of STAAND and students taking the prom promise plan to wear bracelets with Nunes' name on it as a reminder that the students are dedicating their prom to his memory. Students wear the bracelet with his name on it as a symbol of bringing him to their prom because he was never able to attend his own.
