Rep. Morrison Named to America’s Cup Host Committee

The America's Cup World Series will take place June 23 to July 1 in Newport.

Rep. Richard P. Morrison (D-Dist. 68, Bristol, Warren) has been named to the America’s Cup World Series Host Committee.

The appointment to the committee was announced recently by Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee.

The America’s Cup Host Committee was established by executive order of the governor to help coordinate Rhode Island’s efforts to ensure a successful racing event. The AC World Series will take place June 23 to July 1 in Newport. The committee will work closely with the America’s Cup Event Authority, municipalities and maritime and other businesses in the area to facilitate race team and spectator needs, coordinate safety measures and all other necessary functions.

The event is expected to draw a significant number of visitors to the area, and create hundreds of jobs and bring more than $70 million into the state’s economy.

“I am truly honored to be asked to serve on the host committee and it’s a great pleasure to be able to work with the dedicated and talented people on the panel,” said Representative Morrison. “I look forward to assisting them and helping to make this an outstanding event for our state.”

Representative Morrison is serving his first term in the House of Representatives, where he is a member of the House Committee on Judiciary, the House Committee on Small Business and the Joint Committee on Economic Development. He is an attorney and lives in Bristol.

This is great, having our Rep. on the committee. It will be good for Bristol's boat companies, which I know Mr. Morrison has worked hard to help stay in business.

I didn't know he represented anything that didn't have a union attachment.

In 1917, the schooner yacht America was sold to a company headed by Charles H. W. Foster, and in 1921 was sold to the America Restoration Fund. Again, the nation’s love and respect for the old sailor prompted another restoration. Secretary of the Navy Charles Francis Adams began a fund raising drive from well-healed private sources. Besides money from private donors, the yacht clubs of New Bedford and Fall River, Massachusetts, and New Haven and Stamford, Connecticut as well as from the Newport Chamber of Commerce each donated two hundred dollars to the restoration. Charles H. W. Foster, gave the craft to the Eastern Yacht Club, which later sold her to the U. S. Naval Academy for one dollar, as a nucleus of an American maritime museum at Annapolis.
Lacking maintenance there, by 1940, she had become seriously decayed. On March 29, 1942, during a heavy snowstorm, the shed where the America was being stored collapsed. Three years later, in 1945, the remains of the shed and the ship were finally scrapped and burned.

Given that you are a writer Mr. Simpson, maybe you should do a little more research before you post comments. As your above comment with regards to Rep Morrison is false. This doesn't make me feel you are very competent as a historical writer.

Dear Palmtree, My statement about Morrison is strictly political tongue-in-cheek. If you can't tell the difference between political rib-jabbing and historical comment, I guess you haven't read any of my 16 books.
By the way, I'm using my real name, why are you hiding behind an alias?
