The Sunday Political Brunch – Aug. 5

Last week I wrote that we were in one of the quietest political times of the year. People were on summer vacation or watching the Olympics and not much was happening until the political conventions later this month. Yikes, was I wrong!

242 Comments and Counting – Aside from my website, this column is published every week via EastGreenwich.Patch.com and on my TV station’s website ABC6.com. Usually I get a handful of comments each week, plus a few “likes” when it is posted on Facebook. I was stunned at the response, mostly from mentioning the “Chick-fil-A” gay marriage controversy. We’ve had 242 comments so far – some of them reasoned and thoughtful; some of them highly emotional and volatile; and, lots of them straying way off topic. In short, they run the spectrum. Whether I agree with them or not, the vocal outpouring has been fascinating.

The Chicken, or the Egg – So who won this week? On Wednesday, it was “National Appreciation Day” for Chick-fil-A, with tens of thousands turning out to defend the company and its owner’s support of traditional marriage (and buying lots of chicken, too). On Friday, tens of thousands turned out for a same-sex “Kiss-In” for those who support gay marriage and oppose the Chick-fil-A owner. The winner was the First Amendment. People on both sides were able to freely assemble and express their views. Yes, it got emotional at times (and even downright nasty in some places), but people on all sides got to vent. One Chick-fil-A opponent even videotaped himself berating a fast food clerk at the drive-thru. The video went viral and the anti Chick-fil-A guy was fired from his job. Whoops! Here’s the link: http://tsminteractive.com/man-fired-berating-chick-fil-a-employee/

Kentucky Fried November – I laughed the other day when House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) weighed in on the controversy saying, “I’m a Kentucky Fried Chicken fan.” Of course the real underlying question is will this matter in November. My prediction: No, this election will be decided on the economy. It’s hard to buy any brand of fried chicken if you don’t have a job.

Profits and Prayers – Some believe that Chick-fil-A is unique in having a religious influence in its business practices, but it is not. Some very prominent and popular companies operate with a faith-based philosophy. Read on: http://www.businessinsider.com/17-big-companies-that-are-intensely-religious-2012-1?op=1

Follow the Bouncing Ball – Remember the old Mitch Miller TV show, where you sang along by following the bouncing ball? This year the “bouncing ball” is the national unemployment rate. Friday it pushed back up to 8.3 percent after three months at 8.2 percent. This is not good news for the Obama White House which must be in absolute panic. They need the rate to drop – even slightly, or to start trending downward – for the President to be re-elected. In modern times no President has been re-elected with unemployment over 8 percent. There are just three more monthly unemployment reports before we vote.

Haters, Racists, Nazis, et al. – The tone of modern political discourse worries me, and from both sides. Take the Chick-fil-A debate where those who oppose gay marriage on legal or religious grounds are called “haters” or prejudiced. If that’s true, then President Obama “hated” gay people up until about two months again when he changed his stance on this issue. Bill and Hillary Clinton both campaigned in favor of traditional marriage, but no one ever said they “hated” gay people. My point is that it’s possible to oppose gay marriage for a variety of reasons, without hating anyone. For example, I know many people who have gay friends and co-workers and support their right to non-discrimination in the workplace, housing, etc. They just disagree on marriage, but that doesn’t mean they hate anyone. So why the name calling? From the other side of the aisle, I questioned a recent Facebook post calling President Obama a Fascist. So he’s equal to Mussolini and Hitler? Come on! Let’s debate issues and principles; not play to angry and exaggerated emotions.

What if the Election is a Tie? – Maybe it’s too early to talk about this, but the possibility fascinates me. It is possible this election could end in an Electoral College tie with each candidate receiving 269 Electoral votes. Normally, when a candidate won a state, he won all the Electoral votes from that state. But now, two states – Nebraska and Maine – have opted to divide their Electoral votes, based on who won in each of the state’s Congressional Districts. In the last election, John McCain won Nebraska, but only took four of the state’s five Electoral votes. That’s because Barack Obama won the urban Congressional District that includes Omaha, so he received one Electoral vote. With this election likely to have a razor-thin margin, this state-splitting phenomenon increases the chance of a 269 to 269 tie. That would throw the election into the House of Representatives, but would also likely send it to the U.S. Supreme Court on the constitutional challenge over a state splitting its Electoral votes. Can you say, “Election 2000 rerun?”

Mark, thanks for your balanced observations.

Hope you see this before it gets buried under the avalanche of hyperbolic comments that I assume will start appearing from the two ends of the political spectrum in short order :-).

With the Obama administration killing jobs is job one.
President Obama said “no” to the pipeline that would transport Canadian oil from that country’s vast reserves of oil sand to the refineries of Texas, creating jobs along the whole route. Even the liberal Washington Post editorial board thinks that decision is foolish and makes the point that stopping the pipeline won’t even help the environment:
Last winter I had to go help an older friend who needed some help in his home. When I got there I noticed he came to the door with a coat , hat and gloves on . He had his heat set at 50 deg. He told me he didn't want to run out of oil, and have his pipes freeze . After I help fix his drain I asked if he needed help. He told me he would make out OK . The next day I sent the oil truck with a hundred gallons to his house. This is what our old folks face with high energy prices. It is just a shame people had to vote for this President and his ridicules policies.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 163,000 in July, and the unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 8.3 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.
I can remember when seasonal jobs would bring the unemployment rate down to 2%. Jobs are not being created this year as many employers don't believe it is worth hiring extra help. The inventory many businesses bought is not being produced as demand is not their. We know the reason in part is many have decided to put off major purchases in fear of the future job situation. Many fear loosing their job in the months to come. This President lacks the skill and the charisma to change that belief.

Dear Lord, Joe, why do you insist on making it so easy?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/transcanada-gets-final-ok-for-gulf-part-of-canada-to-texas-oil-pipeline-construction-to-start/2012/07/27/gJQALpa9DX_story.html

In this article from last week's Washington Post, it's pretty clear that the environmentalists are critical of Obama for giving the *ok*, not "stopping the pipeline". The President of TransCanada is quoted as saying "TransCanada is now poised to put approximately 4,000 Americans to work constructing the $2.3-billion pipeline that will be built in three distinct ‘spreads’ or sections."

This is the age of the Internet, Joe. Do you think we can't research this stuff?

Joe Sousa.

6:14 pm on Sunday, August 5, 2012

Did you read the story before you posted it ?
From the article
The line from Cushing will help relieve a bottleneck at the Oklahoma refinery, but doesn’t fulfill TransCanada’s broader goal of transporting more Canadian crude to U.S. refineries. Pipeline advocates say that would help decrease U.S. reliance on oil from unstable, sometimes unfriendly, countries, and provide much-needed jobs to an economy suffering from 8.2 percent unemployment.

Joe, the Keystone XL pipeline is to run from Canada to the ports in Texas to allow Canada to sell the tar-sands oil on the open market, it is not to bring more Canadian Crude to US refineries. Yes the pipeline will have depot stops near American refineries, those refineries are not configured to process tar-sands quality crude. There are already pre-existing Trans Canada pipelines delivering higher quality crude to the US market, those pipelines are operating at about 65% capacity. If the goal were to bring useable crude into the US market they could use existing pipelines

Deb: I agree emphatically. I don't have the time to search for Seekonk-related pieces on Patch. I think we should explore another option -- maybe setting something up on Facebook for those who want to discuss Seekonk issues. I'm not interested in the polls and all the other clutter. When Patch first started, it was a welcome source of information for Seekonk residents. Not so much any more.

What you can try Carol is to write a blog on the Seekonk patch yourself, on a local issue, Usually as long as you stay away from adding anything nationa of State wide in it, you will find it will only attract locals. There are many blogs on the various patchs like this. Just a thought no offence.

That's okay, deb. Aren't you getting tired of Attleboro squabbling over SC appointees and ARA problems? I say, if there is nothing in Seekonk to report on, bring on East Greenwich or East Providence. At least half the people in Seekonk have roots in RI, anyway.

Emcee: I appreciate any blogger or columnist who brings a topic to the table and has a different perspective. Mr Heroux, for instance. Or the food lady with her pretty awesome recipes. But this column is pure red meat. I can just listen to talk radio and get some work done at the same time.

And I agree with you and Carol. One would think there is nothing going on in Seekonk. Yet we will soon be revisiting a zoning issue.

Speaking of development, Bill Moyer had a gentleman on yesterday to discuss his movie "You.ve Been Trumped", a documentary about a famed billionaire developer who America apparently loves to hate. Or hates to love.

Nard you forgot to mention that Obama has stopped the pipeline, he has nothing to do with the gulf part and cannot stop it if he wanted to. The states approved that, and becuae it does not cross the national border the Fed is out of it. Good spin, but no cigar on that.

Read you link, he said he is ok with it is all. Of course he is, he has nothing to do with that section. Reminds me of him saying he is responsible for the shale oil increase in ND, problem is that is on private lands and the fed has nothing to do with that either. Private enterprise does. Not to mention the people who own mineral rights on the land there for generations are finally getting a return. Now those are the facts.

Deb, why would you want fewer comments, on national or State issues for that matter. We are not a closed society of tribes with seperation from each other. We are a State and a Republic. In this State which is only 30 miles by 90 miles, what happens anywhere in the State affects the rest of the State, because of how interconnected we are. Not trying to offend or anything like that. Just think we cannot be equal if we are seperate thinking.

Every year when refineries close for maintenance we see a spike in prices . The same after a storm or fire. Having a President and a Congress that would allow an increase in refineries would solve not only that problem but would help keep prices in check . When heating oil reaches over three dollars a gallon people have to chose . Eat or Heat Medication or more blankets. I don't have a gas line on my street so natural gas is not an option. I burn wood when I'm home but have to use oil the rest of the time .

Haters, Racists, Nazis, et al. – Is a good topic Mark, but will be very volatile indeed with the current climate today.
I also look forward to the tie scenario, though I do not think it will happen hopefully, but that is why we have the Electoral College, well it could be tweaked ( I am not sure I like changing the founders plans) perhaps it could be made a little better on the dividing of electoral votes, but that also I am uneasy about mandating something like that, as it interferes with States rights in my opinion.
Would not mind going back to the State Legislatures picking the representatives and Senators who go to Washington though, like it use to be; That my put the brakes on this shutting out of the average person, and allow more local control, rather than it being based on money like it is now. Course that just an opinion lol.

There is land around New England and even in this State where a State of the art Refinery could be built. A large Opportunity was missed on Aquidneck Island not to long ago. That being the Navy Tank Farms. A perfect Storage area for Heating Oil, and Gasoline To the tune of millions an millions of gallons. But instead some of the Tank farms were imploded, some are still there and the towns only seem to see more land to develop for tourism and luxury housing, or the wasteful open space towns seem to be enamored with of late or gambling as the fix all. Massive tax breaks to housing developers yet again negating any real contribution to the tax base.

Where were are State and Local politicians on this? No-where to be found. Our State representatives, love to take credit for things they have nothing to do with; like Defense Contractors winning a contract that increases jobs. They do not decide what company builds what, that would be illegal. The Pentagon and other agencies do.

What happened to the fishing industry here and in MA? The State of RI and MA destroyed it along with the Federal level. I believe almost any local, knows at least one fisherman who was put out of business or now barely breaks even. All done in the name of tourism or special interest. The answers are there, just ignored by our politicians and sadly many taxpayers, who do not support the changes needed.

The burden is on taxpayers because of these and many other things. High paying jobs are ignored.

There will always be the NIMBY attitute. Since refineries are messy, sweaty looking places, it's hard to picture any area in Massachusetts that would allow them. We go for the bio-tec industries and they serve us fairly well if you're educated. I think, RI will fight against refineries even if the jobs are steady and pay well.

Of course, they all think that casinos are the answer. Gambling is just another way to tax the desperate. Plus, the jobs are generally low paying service jobs... cleaning rooms, handing out drinks. But Massachusetts can't wait to get four of them going. I think three will file bankruptcy in the first decade.

Lot of loss opportunities everywhere and all a taxpayer can do is elect new faces until one of them becomes a hero. Your Whitehouse and probably even Reid could be replaced. For Massachusetts, I've yet to figure out what Kerry stands for. I think we have decent guy in Scott Brown, but who knows. Our reps get lost in the crowd, although Barney Frank used to make a difference for the fishermen.

I don't know Emcee, the ones that have been rehabbed tend to look like futuristic cities to me ;-}.

But you are correct, like the last 35 or so years, environmental groups and regulation have prevented any from being built. To include forcing some to close down, because they would not allow them to rebuild or build a new one in the same damn place.

Our refineries run at 100% capacity. Another problem was the retooling to make ethanol, one of the biggest mistakes and scams ever. Ethanol takes 21 gallons of water to make one gallon of gasoline, gasoline takes 3 gallons of water. Ethanol can only be 12% of a gallon of gas, at 15% it damages the engines and retooling of current cars on the road is next to impossible, not to mention retooling the industry itself.

It has raised the price of food all across the spectrum. If people would look at labels, they would be surprised at the corn products in them. Even Al Gore has stated ethanol was the worst thing he ever championed. There is no easy answer granted. But if we continue to not make hard choices we will never be free of this failing economy.

We must quit letting "minority special interest" out weigh the needs of the majority. I fully agree on new blood and thinkers who know we cannot repair and throw money at a failed system. We need a new system plain and simple in almost every area of government, from education to industry. That’s my take on it anyway ;-}

It is up the residents of Middletown and Portsmouth to decide what to due with surplus Navy land. It is the responsibility of the oil companies to build any new oil refineries. If we want new industries to consider RI the GA needs to reduce the cost of doing business in the state. Until this happens, RI will remain the same economically.

Just A T. Also Newport, this is an opertunity that all 3 towns should have been working on a long time ago in my opinion. To the oil companyies, they have tried for 35 years until the cost of legal fees, and regulations, made it not viable profit wise. They answer to share holders after all.

You are very correct on the GA as well. Being rated worst in the country for business enviroment sure doen't hel create any jobs, other than summer low wage and temporary sadly. Dependence on tourism is a recipe for failure as Greece and many others have failures have proved in the this country and across the world.

Not to mentions the gift that keeps on giving for free, i.e. the government, state and fed.

Does mean more jobs, which means more production, which means lower prices on many products, including food. Not to mention the money staying in this Country and lowering foriegn dependencies for oil. Also drilling for oil is the same as drilling for natural gas, which is in the same places as oil. We are kinf in the world of natural gas if the drilling was unfettered for it.

If we have a boom on oil production here, it has to lower prices, why do you think when the Saudi or opec curtail production to raise the price. The same is true if we were to flood the market with more of our own production which would start a price war, and in price wars the price goes down, not up. That is what you do not see in these studies.

Once Obama is out ,Congress and the new president can fix our energy problem. So many products are made from oil it's no wonder prices are high. When you restrict production with over burdensome regulations it's not surprising .
Currently every drop of oil coming to RI has to be shipped by barge. this adds to cost and shortages when bad weather hits. The policies need to change.

As a 2008 Obama supporter, I'm disappointed in his performance, but people in this country tend to overstate the ability of the president to effect change without a cooperative congress. I'm also very disappointed that the Republicans chose Mitt Romney as their candidate, leaving moderates like myself with no other choice except to vote for Obama again.

Last year, a couple of idiots got permission from the town to set up shop on the sidewalk near the old bank building on Main Road across from Humphreys. Their mission: to convince people that "Obama is Hitler." When I questioned them on this belief, they had only the barest clue about Hitler's policies, Obama's policies, or the Constitution. They had resorted to parroting things they had heard elsewhere.

No matter what side of the political spectrum you are rooting for, leave hate and prejudice out of the equation, have an original thought, and get informed.

When you post the articles that I like to post, and someone disagrees with them...out they come with their name calling. For instance, @Maria Cabral calling me a bully, which I am not. And then she went to post her own bullying remarks, her "<snicker> type of comment (how childish, is she a minor Patch editors, and perhaps should have the express written approval of an adult, prior to posting). Working in Providence on Broad st. I have observed hundreds of kids walking around with little to do They hang on the corners with there friends . There are no jobs for our youth . Between the bad economy and the illegal aliens who take the jobs these kids are being ripped off. When you have 3 out of 4 young adults who can't find a job it's no wonder crime is up. So why would this President put illegal aliens before our own. Why would he give work visa's to millions blocking our youth from the few jobs that exist. It's time to fix what's broken in America. It starts with telling our congressional delegation to take a hike. Time for new representation with common sense ideas. The Democrats we send to DC. have sold our youth out. The crime and murders in our cities are their doing. They think more welfare is the answer. We know Jobs and Opportunity are the answer. This Nov. We need change that works.

If I'm seeing the things I describe in my posts, then others are as well. I have watched several families I know loose their homes, jobs, and their faith in our system. They left our state for work down south. Their parents who are seniors now are left here with no one to help them with there home maintenance and odd jobs. They don't get to see the grand kids but maybe once a year . The economy has been so bad in our State that we are No1# in home foreclosures. People know why this is happening and are starting to fight back against it. The RI Tea Party might be small but it is packed with activists who don't lay down and take it.

Why Mitt Romney is Unlikable!

A lot is being said in the media about Mitt Romney not being "likable" or that he doesn't "relate well" to people. Frankly, we struggled to understand why. So after much research, we have come up with a Top Ten List to explain this "unlikablility."

Top Ten Reasons To Dislike Mitt Romney:

1. Drop-dead, collar-ad handsome with gracious, statesmanlike aura. Looks like every central casting's #1 choice for Commander-in-Chief.

2. Been married to ONE woman his entire life, and has been faithful to her, including through her bouts with breast cancer and MS.

3. No scandals or skeletons in his closet. (How boring is that?)

4. Can't speak in a fake, southern, "black preacher voice" when necessary.

5. Highly intelligent. Graduated cum laude from both Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School...and by the way, his academic records are NOT sealed.

Reply

Jack Baillargeron

8:50 am on Tuesday, August 7, 2012

6. Doesn't smoke or drink alcohol, and has never done drugs, not even in the counter-culture age when he went to college. Too square for today's America?

7. Represents an America of "yesterday", where people believed in God, went to Church, didn't screw around, worked hard, and became a SUCCESS!

8. Has a family of five great sons....and none of them have police records or are in drug rehab. But of course, they were raised by a stay-at-home mom, and that "choice" deserves America's scorn.

9. Oh yes.....he's a MORMON. We need to be very afraid of that very strange religion that teaches its members to be clean-living, patriotic, fiscally conservative, charitable, self-reliant, and honest.

10. And one more point.....pundits say because of his wealth, he can't relate to ordinary Americans. I guess that's because he made that money HIMSELF.....as opposed to marrying it or inheriting it from Dad. Apparently, he didn't understand that actually working at a job and earning your own money made you un-relatable to Americans.

My goodness, it's a strange world, isn't it?

Gee #12 just happens to be like Obama who was totally against it, till a few weeks ago, but then it is an election year.

#13 same as above.

#14 same as above with a caveat, That was a State issue which is a right of the State. Check enumerated powers not granted the the federal government are reserved to the States. Not to mention it was a compromise with a DEM controled Legislature.

Gee lot more to that huh, when you read all about it. Much more interesting the pundit talking points lol.

Jack (or anyone):

When copying and pasting words from another website, please always include the source of those words, in this case:

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/power_rankings/congressorg/bio/userletter/?id=378&letter_id=8560695956&content_dir=congressorg

Including the source allows others to confirm the info easily as well as to place it in context. I have no problem with the statements you've posted, but I might have, for example, if they had been drawn from some far-right or far-left source. As it stands, they're typical biographic info issued by anyone who's running for office.

Thanks for your consideration.

Nard, Well I know the letter you are talking about, however it is from his biography. I saw no need to have the whole letter or Congress.org site listed since I was using information available in the public domain and reseached it at many web sites to verify. If I put the 20 or so sites I needed to verify, I doubt anyone would search them.

Also just because a site may be right or left leaning does not mean things are not true. It is up to the individual to reseach.

I love how people decry Wiki, but many of the things on there have links to were the person who worte it got their info. Granted some do not. So those are the ones you check yourself. It is like that no matter the site, though like everyone, not being perfect I sometime post things that are reasonable question to me, even in a so called chain mail etc.

Most of it was verified from his biography.

Also Nard, when people ask a question of another poster, it is not my job to do their research for them, and I have found most times they know it. They just do it I assume because they think they are in college and are a proffesor that requires a thesis on weverything you say in a post. So I get tired of it as I am not the researcher of these people who are demeaning, disrespecting, name calling internet trolling etc. It is all a game to them though I pretty much have most of them classified so far.

Again though, if it it a left or right site, FOX, MSNBC, ABC,NBC etc etc. Does not mean it is not true, if you reseach yourself. All of these outlets are not to be believed exclusivly, that would be foolis.

But what do you see of the majority of answers to me. Pundit talking point retorts with no information supporting the point at all. Again I am not here to spendthe time to correct pundit points. Let them do their own research I say.

No, it's pretty clear you were copying and pasting from the letter. The last paragraph........

But, on the minus side, he never was a "Community
Organizer", never took drugs or smoked pot, never
got drunk, did not associate with communists
or terrorists, nor did he attend a church whose pastor
called for God to damn the US.

.....is certainly not included on Romney's biography. It is, however, taken verbatim from the letter.

It's no big deal, I'm just asking you to list your source when you're using another's words. Yes, we can all research it, but it just saves a step. You were obviously on that web page (or another with the same content) when you copied and pasted, so it wouldn't have taken too much longer to make a reference to the original link.

Thanks again for your consideration in this regard.

Or this Larry

In 2002, he was elected Governor of the State of
Massachusetts where he eliminated a 1.5 billion deficit.

Some Interesting Facts about Romney:

Bain Capital, starting with one small office supply store
in Massachusetts, turned it into Staples; now over
2,000 stores employing 90,000 people.

Bain Capital also worked to perform the same kinds
of business miracles again and again, with companies
like Domino's, Sealy, Brookstone, Weather Channel,
Burger King, Warner Music Group, Dollarama,
Home Depot Supply and many others.

He was an unpaid volunteer campaign worker for
his dad's gubernatorial campaign 1 year.

He was an unpaid intern in his dad's governor's
office for eight years.

He was an unpaid bishop and state president of
his church for ten years.

He was an unpaid President of the Salt Lake
Olympic Committee for three years.

He took no salary and was the unpaid Governor of
Massachusetts for four years.

He gave his entire inheritance from his father to charity.

Then of course there is this.

Mitt Romney is one of the wealthiest self-made men
in our country but has given more back to its citizens
in terms of money, service and time than most men.

And in 2011 Mitt Romney gave over $4 million to charity,
almost 19% of his income.... Just for comparison purposes,
Obama gave 1% and Joe Biden gave $300 or .0013%.

Mitt Romney is Trustworthy:

He will show us his birth certificate

He will show us his high school and college transcripts.

He will show us his social security card.

He will show us his law degree.

He will show us his draft notice.

He will show us his medical records.

He will show us his income tax records.

He will show us he has nothing to hide.

Mitt Romney's background, experience and
trustworthiness show him to be a great leader and
an excellent citizen for President of the United States.

You may think that Romney may not be the best
representative the Republicans could have selected.
At least I know what religion he is, and that he won't
desecrate the flag, bow down to foreign powers,
or practice fiscal irresponsibility.
I know he has the ability to turn this financial debacle
that the current regime has gotten us into. We won't
like all the things necessary to recover from this
debt, but someone with Romney's background can do it.

Though I am nut a member of any political party or organization. I do know that this country has been divided about equal for decades not, even with the independent movement.

This has created the damned if you do damned if you don't senario's in most election around the country. Especially the Presidency.

It also comes down to the lesser of 2 evils. That to me is what has to be determined. Which of the 2 canidates can actually get elected and then which canidate has the most issues you care about that he/she would accomplish in your own opinion.

The 3rd party, which I really wish would come to fruition, is just not there yet. So you then have to ask yourself, do you continue the policies of the one in office, or do try a new one. This applies locally as well. Thats my opinion on voting anyway. I do disagree with a lot of Mitts issues, but I disagree with more of Obama and lets face it, Obama has not fixed anything yet at all as far as jobs and the economy in general. With out that we cannot recover, everything else matters not, without those issues addressed. ;-}

While normally I might agree with you, Romney has ZERO chance of winning in Rhode Island. Zero.

As much as a dislike Obama it's hard to get too worked up about this fact because Romney is a joke. The guy has no morals and anyone who think Romney is going to support them if in office is deluding themselves. He's going to support himself and the small, rich, group of Republicans who helped get him there.

Whether you vote for Romney or vote for a 3rd party candidate like Gary Johnson you're essentially throwing your vote away. The only way a 3rd party will ever come to fruition is if people take a stand and VOTE FOR A THIRD PARTY CANDIDATE. The best you can do is make a statement and vote your conscious.

The last think I want to do is tell the Republican Party to throw more losers like Romney our way.

He got has some flip flops and a few issues I disagree with. But a possum would be better than Obama to me.

Lets face it, Obama and his crew have accomplished next to nothing with the econmy and refuse to change what has not worked. New idea's are required.

I agree sadly that he will be beholden to some no doubt. The nature of the system that needs to be changed for sure. But it is what it is for now.

I alway tell people to vote who they want, however I just gave you my opinion on the reality of the system right now.

Definition of SELF-MADE: made such by one's own actions; especially : having achieved success or prominence by one's own efforts <a self–made man>

Which naturly means they are assuming numbers, and evidently reading the future of what may or may not be in the final version. There for it cannot be properly debated Remember Healthcare. No-one new all of what was in it and most people still don't. Heck congress admited they hadn'tread it on bothsides except for a few.

That was ok though right? Tell me larry, what is your gross income and I will do a study, using just that number. Nice spin, but if you watch the news every day you will find many teen had accident in which someone died, they are called tragedy's not killing someone. Wow your disgusting

Wow Nuburg, You really need help with anologies.

"What Jack is doing is the equivalent of yelling "fire!" in a crowded auditorium. Say it loudly enough often enough and it "becomes" true. Truthiness at its finest."

Fire in a theater really lol. Not even close to the the other quote lol. Actually damn insane comparision, but I have to consider the source which always seems to be half truths and half baked comment, when it comes to politics or life in general lol.

Polls do not determine an election, see harry truman, dewey, al gore, carter, nixon, and a few 100 congressmen and local politicians over the years for facts on that, do your own reseach though it is common knowledge larry ;-}

If I am a candidate for office, I would rather have the majority electorate like me rather than hate me. Politics 101.

Larry; one more thing.

You said "Mitt cannot disclose his plans for America, details of his Tax Plan". then just how did those people you harp about have proved his plan is bad and will not work, figure that out if they had no details. Don't bother to answer that on second though. There is no answer, you cannot prove something with out the details as you have to assume and that is not scientific or mathimatic, they call that guessing or mind reading maybe. lol

You are correct on the nothing, but it will be nothing left if we vote for Ron, he cannot get elected and Obama would possible get re-elected. Yea I know him and romney are the lesser of 2 eveil, Obama being much worse. But that is the choice.

Should note I like many of Ron Pauls stand on issues, other than his military stand which would put us back to per wwII and surely start wwIII.

Just my opinion of Ron however.

Larry, why because he is open to more than just the talking point highlighted on the mainstream media? Because he does his own investigating? Because he brings talking point to the table that you cannot even start to counter? Because Perot would have been the best thing that happened to this country? Because Paul could be the best thing that happens to this country? Because the fiscal state of our nation, weather we like it or not, cannot afford to continue the military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us of? Because some people are so set in regurgitating others talking point that they cannot come up with an original thought to save their life? Because the wonderful times that I enjoyed the tail end of being only 28 myself are what I want my son to have? Because the government that my father’s generation and the debt from his has left mine in a situation where we cannot fathom ever getting out of? Because the monetary policy is in such a disarray from Nixon handing it fully over to a corrupt system run by wall street cronies that only care about their profits? Because half of the involvements of our military are built off of lies and it shows thought the military men and women not support the current president with donations? Because if you really followed the money trail you would realize that none of this even matters and we are all just a cash cow for our government under the UN to do whatever it wants wherever it wants?

Most Ron Paul supporters (and I do mean most) haven't even read his positions: http://www.ronpaul2012.com/the-issues/ron-paul-plan-to-restore-america/

Repeal Sarbanes-Oxley?! Are you people out of your freakin' minds?!

This is coming from someone who, at the surface, thought Paul could be a great for the country... until I dove into the details.

Of Mark Curtis, anonymous posters, the First Amendment, voting with your feet & controlling what goes into and/or out of our own mouths.

Welcome to the East Bay, Mark.

Part 1 of 6

Of Mark Curtis-

We must first put Mark Curtis in perspective. Mark is described as a “political journalist” or “political reporter”.

What does that mean in 2012? Is it “just the facts”? Does it include opinion? Does context matter?

News anchors used to present the facts and then interview experts on both sides of an issue.

Now, do we have “reporters” and “journalists” giving us a sometimes indistinguishable amalgamation of “news” facts and opinion? And maybe sometimes a dose of opinionated analyses that forces us to conclude that the messenger may not be a trained, qualified expert, be it legal, medical, economic, etc.

Is Mark a journalist? An opinion blogger? Both? Is there such a thing as a journalist with opinions?

Is this brave new world of “opinews” making us work harder to separate the fact from the opinion?

Maybe today’s “newscasters” need a variety of hats. Like the way Andy Griffith used to do it on the old television show – one minute Andy’s the arresting officer advocating for prosecution and the next he’s the Justice of the Peace readily, fairly & impartially hearing the facts.

But Andy’s hats always alerted the viewers to the difference.

Part 2 of 6.
Of the Anonymous -

Many a great writer
did assume
a nom de plume.

Granted, “name de keyboard”
does not nearly
so poetic sound.

While some great ones wrote anonymously,
not all the anonymous are great ones.

To he who abhors the anonymous,
please accept sincerest advance apologies.

Comments to blogs are about ideas.
Period.

True anonymity is the penultimate expression
of the ultimate in a level playing field for disembodied ideas.

It begins & ends right here so there is no need for non-anonymity as to the free expression of the ideas expressed.

Some who use real names may flatter themselves that they are brave
& say the anonymous are cowards who lack courage.

Fair enough - maybe there is the cowardice in being afraid of being punished for the ideas expressed.

Or maybe the need to know who’s who is a control issues?
Maybe he who is so compelled is the one to be feared?

Maybe, for some, the need to post under one’s real name (can we tell for sure?) is not brave but ego-driven?
Maybe some anonymous posters are not so ego-driven?

Maybe some folks don’t have the luxury of being able to reveal their real names.

Anonymity comes with responsibility no greater than that which is shouldered by those using real names.

Responsible anonymity provides freedom to trot intellectually provocative ideas out for a test drive in the community idea lab & read thoughtful feedback. Now THAT takes bravery.

Fear nor Ego drives me to post under the name I am know by. I fear none and take no credit for posting the truth, the truth how I see it to be. The expressions of ideas in their purest form are only to show opposition to the beliefs of the many. However what is an idea, except a self projected view of the truth? We should be open to ideas and life in every form on every argument. The fact that one would post under a name means simply that they want to be held accountable for what they post. If I am to fear expression then I have accepted the fact that my god given rights have been taken away by my government. This is becoming more of a reality, but until the task of destroying our constitution has completed I shall use my name.

Jonathan, I do accept that my inalienable (not god given) rights have been usurped. But not by the government. They have been usurped by extremist elements which seek to control the government and people with fear. And they do. when members of certain political groups proudly state that they carry guns for "safety" and routinely target people and harass them, anonymity of those opposed to them is a result. atheists and gay people hide themselves behind this cloak for fear of reprisal, not just against them, but their children. the Prayer Banner issue in Cranston is a prime example. Grown men sending death threats to a 16 year old girl. Flower shops refusing to deliver flowers to her. Police officers escorting her to school and 24 hour protection of her house. But those are just the FACTS in Rhode Island.

Dan D, I can accept that the facts are pointing to groups of extremist taking away our rights, however the government allows this. We are the governed and the governing. We have the power to change the course of this country yet most of us sit by while these actions occur. This has caused such hostility among men of likeness, and the government through media outlets magnifies these hostilities and causes them to gain unprecedented attention.
As far as the Cranston Prayer Banner is concerned this is the right of the people as it is the right of the girl to either enjoy or despise such a public expression of religious sided vales. However for the governing body to allow this to be removed empowers the extremist few to continue such actions moving the bar higher, and higher. This in turn causes more hostility and ends with man hating man.
We are living in a de-evolution of our society. This is why we strongly need to heed the further control our government has adopted through moves such as the Patriot Act, the NDAA, the TSA, and Cyber attacks of personal privacy. Through this the government has its hand involved. “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” -Benjamin Franklin

There is a big difference between "I do not like what you did" and the furor which cause her to require police protection. Laws were broken and nothing was done. Why? Because the majority agrees with the extreme element and is therefore loath to punish them. It really is no different than the Taliban. the majority is silent as long as they are not the ones being persecuted, yet will scream bloody murder when someone appears to infringe on their rights. That is why the person who filed a complaint about the Woonsocket cross chose to remain anonymous. and that is also why the mayor of that town is demanding the revelation of this person's identity. They want to harass and shame this person. And the people are all for it! We are in the midst of a culture war. The majority, led by extremists, and ignored by the unaffected, is working to push their way of life and their values on others. They are removing all of our freedom of thought and life in the process. Those of us on the fringe must stay on the fringe and hide ourselves because those that may agree we have a right to our beliefs and thoughts stay silent because they do not want to get involved. After all, they are not the threatened. All it takes for evil to thrive is for good men to do nothing.
