What Happened to Citizen Service?

Channel 10 aired a segment about the tatterted flag at India Point Park over Memorial Day. A concerned citizen (a veteran) call the Parks Department to report this and nothing was done.

On Memorial day, there hung that rotten flag. It is obvious that a person at the parks department did not follow through, or the proper person was never notified, or it was blown off, but it took a Channel 10 report to embarrass the mayor of Providence, and the parks department for not doing their job.

I thought I was the only person who had this issue, either being told we do not have enough people, or we do not have money. Issues with hazard/unsafe conditions here in Warren fell onto deaf ears with the former town manager and other officials with the same excuses. Years back a phone call to Town Hall used to get a response to correct a problem, but in today's world it goes unanswered.

A good example of this was after last year's tropical storm. Five weeks later, the town of Warren was still trying to clean up the mess. The excuse was they were short-handed in personnel and overwhelmed with downed trees. Years ago, the National Guard was called to help.

Overall opinion is either the people in charge are not doing their job, but where are our tax dollars going? I do not see these issues improving, but only going to get worse.

Thought it was a good little Story on the growing trend of people either ignoring or just plain callousness on their part, when it comes to our Flag, be it in Cemeteries, parks, building etc.

But your segway into Warren, pet peeves you have David, which is your right, should not be tied to the Flag in my opinion. Wish you would re-write it to just be the Flag injustice that was done and cheapens the whole first part of the story you wrote. Just my opinion.

Jack you missed the boat, The flag was the issue, however it was the lack of someone responsible to ensure the problem was corrected. Because our officials do not care about the citizen anymore, and you know I am a good example of that. wheather it be a flag or sidewalks, or road hazards, our officials do nothing. Example, the guardrail that rounds the curve on metacom ave and arlington has been struck again, its riped in half and is hanging into the sidewalk. I am waiting to see how long it will sit like that before it gets reported. Now if we had our highway director who is on the roads daily, you would think he would call the state dot and repoort it. but Ill bet you a case a beer it will still be sitting there over the 4th weekend, or it will take a small child riding a bike to get cut on the sharp metal before it is repaired. Get my drift

Disagree there David, India Point Park is not in Warren and I think you made it less of a oint what happened to that Flag, by then going into the other Warren town issues, just seems untoward to me. The dis-respect shown thisFlag obviously for some time is what is the important issue here. Well your issues localy are not small, I fail to see, adding that at the end. It appears to me using the Flag incident just to say that. That how I see it anyway. It is after all just my opinion on it anyway ;-}.

sorry jack, The flag was the issue, my point im trying to make was it was left in that condition because a public official did not do its job. And my point is just that, Citizen Serivce is no longer. I understand your saying about the flag, but in general dont you think that every community should have changed flag's before memorial day, the fact that this flag flew on Memorial day is that some official didnt do his job, and a private citizen called in to bring this to their attention and still nothing got done. So in Providene, Warren, or Wash DC, The citizen service is going to the birds, because public officials do not care. By the way I want to start a business, where do I go to get that 75million $ free loan?

It's been a steady decline when it comes to RI's infrastructure .The roads, the state buildings ,the parks and rec areas . ,Where do all the taxes we pay go, and why are we in a state of decline ? Answer " Apathy " The majority of active voters have a personal interest . The majority of people who could vote don't . Their either too busy or too stupid to care.

The first duty of a citizen is to vote. Many people died to defend that right. People have been given so much by our forefathers and they just schrug their shoulders. This reflects back on their parents. What happened to citizenship? I believe part of the problem is the schools no longer teach civics classes. They can have all of the patriotic parades they want but how many reall attend them and does anything rub off on these people? We just had the Memorial Day Weekend with many events. I doubt many of the youth today understand what that is all about. I wonder how many go to the cemeteries and put flags on the graves of veterans? Where is the pride?

Govstench, you hit the nail on the head, couldn't agree with you more. Jack you are also correct, the flag should especially be attended too around memorial day. The lack of care shows nothing but disrespect for those whom have passed on that served this country. Really no excuse for not taking care of it.
