Local Army Family Overwhelmed by Support for Son's Homecoming

A request for some flags in the family's Middletown, R.I., yard has ballooned into a community-wide effort to make a local Private First Class' homecoming a special moment.

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — A simple request by a local Army family on Saturday to help put some signs in their yard for their 19-year-old son's homecoming from a deployment in Afghanistan has mushroomed into a community-wide show of support.

"The response has been amazing," said LeAnn Bosch, mother of Spenser Bosch, a Private First Class in the 101st Airborne Division, who comes home late Sunday night.

"What has been awesome are the stories, one man dropped off 6 flags, each one represents someone in his family who served, another little boy made a sign and he showed up in an Army uniform," Bosch said.

The yard is now full of flags and signs and more keep showing up. On Saturday, the Bosch family fielded calls and messages from well wishers and people who want to either come to help decorate or be there when Bosch arrives at T.F. Green in Warwick tonight or gets home in Middletown.

Bosch said they even got a call from the local fire chief, who said he's working with the police to see about putting together a police escort from the town line. And the word is that many off-duty officers and firefighters from the area will be on hand to show the Bosch family that the service of every member of the Army and the armed forces in general is appreciated and respected.

"I can't thank you enough," Bosch said.

Bosch lands at the airport around 10 p.m. and is expected back home around 11 p.m.

You can still drop of flags and signs at the house. It's located at 49 Maple Ave. in Middletown.

We'll have more on this story throughout the day.
