What's Open, Closed on Victory Day?

The holiday only recognized in the Ocean State makes for many office and bank closings on Monday, Aug. 12.

Can you believe Rhode Island is still the only state to celebrate Victory Day? This year, Victory Day falls on Monday, Aug. 12. What in Bristol and Warren is open and closed for the holiday?

  • Bristol and Warren town offices are closed, including town halls.
  • Most banks are closed.
  • Retail stores, including markets and liquor stores are open, though many may have Sunday hours. Check individual stores for hours. Find contact information in the Bristol-Warren Patch directory.
  • Post offices are open as usual.
Rhode Island is the only state in the U.S. that continues to observe Victory Day, which marks the end of World War II. The holiday, established in 1946 by President Harry Truman, is commonly known as "Victory over Japan Day" or "VJ Day".

Some critics say Victory Day should no longer be recognized as a holiday, because the U.S. is now allied with Japan.
