A Bristol woman was charged with drunk driving early last Friday morning, Dec. 27, after her vehicle was pulled over on Poppasquash Road after starting to make a turn onto the East Bay Bike Path.
Shari Capaldi, 48, of 139 Bradford St., was charged with a DUI first offense and refusing to submit to a chemical test to determine her blood alcohol level, according to the arrest report. She failed a field sobriety test, police said.
Capaldi’s vehicle was spotted first on Bradford Street without its headlights and rear running lights illuminated, according to the arrest report. The vehicle turned right to travel north on High Street, then made a left-hand turn west onto Washington Street and then a right hand turn north onto Hope Street. The vehicle reportedly failed to stop at the clearly posted stop signs at both intersections, according to the arrest report.
The vehicle then made a left turn onto Poppasquash Road and began turning left onto the bike path before a patrol officer following the car activated its lights and siren. The vehicle “veered back onto the right-hand lane came to an abrupt stop,” according to the arrest report.
Capaldi showed numerous signs of being intoxicated, including slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol, according to the arrest report. She also told police officers she was trying to find “Burberry Street” in Bristol. There is no street by that name in Bristol, although here is a Mulberry Street.
After failing the field sobriety test, Capaldi was taken to the police station and held overnight to sober up. She was given a summons to appear on District Court to face the DUI charge and also was cited for several traffic violations.
