Hugh Cole School fifth-grader Haleigh Hunt may have saved her friend’s life last Friday, Oct. 4. She was recognized as a hero last Monday, Oct. 7.
Haleigh and Gianna McDonough were eating lunch together when Gianna began choking on a piece of pineapple, according to a story in the Warren Times. Haleigh remembered training she was taught in a health class on the Heimlich Maneuver.
Haleigh jumped up, wrapped her arms around Gianna's chest, stuck a fist under her ribs as taught and pulled inward and outward several times. The pineapple piece popped out.
Haleigh, Gianna and their parents come to Hugh Cole School on Monday for a recognition ceremony with Warren Fire Chief Alexander Galinelli, who referred to Haleigh as “a hero.”
