Hugh Cole 5th-Grader Hailed as 'Hero'

Haleigh Hunt used Heimlich Maneuver to dislodge food stuck in friend's windpipe at Hugh Cole School.

Hugh Cole School fifth-grader Haleigh Hunt may have saved her friend’s life last Friday, Oct. 4. She was recognized as a hero last Monday, Oct. 7.

Haleigh and Gianna McDonough were eating lunch together when Gianna began choking on a piece of pineapple, according to a story in the Warren Times. Haleigh remembered training she was taught in a health class on the Heimlich Maneuver.

Haleigh jumped up, wrapped her arms around Gianna's chest, stuck a fist under her ribs as taught and pulled inward and outward several times. The pineapple piece popped out.
