Bristol Town Council Considering Serving Drinks on Sidewalks

The Bristol Town Council meets Wednesday, Jan. 8.

The request from two downtown Bristol restaurants to allow the serving of alcohol outside on the public sidewalks returns to the Town Council table Wednesday evening, Jan. 8.

The Town Council meets in the Council Chambers in Town Hall. The meeting starts at 7 pm.

Paul Mancieri of Leo’s Ristorante, 365 Hope St., and Robert Vanderhoof of Roberto’s restaurant, 450 Hope St., asked the Town Council last month to change the ordinance on outside dining to allow for alcoholic beverage service.

In short, the restaurateurs want their liquor licenses expanded to the sidewalks, where Leo’s already serves food. They cited Providence, Newport and Westerly as municipalities that allow drinks to be served on public sidewalks.

“We want the same consideration as those towns,” said Mancieri.

All of the town councilors seemed to like the idea of expanding drink service outdoors. But they weren’t ready to commit to the idea without first assessing the impact on Bristol of amending an ordinance that would apply to all restaurants.

A report on the impact from changing the law is expected to be presented to the Town Council Wednesday night.

Here is the complete agenda for the Jan. 8 meeting:
