Parents Let It Out at Colt Andrews School's Boo-Hoo Breakfast

Going back to school isn't just hard on the kids. It's tough for the parents, too.

Sending a child off to school every fall can be a tough transition for many parents. But the parents of  's kindergarten students received a little reassurance Tuesday morning during a "Boo-Hoo Breakfast."

After dodging the morning rain and ushering children to their classrooms, watery-eyed parents gathered in the multipurpose room in Andrews School to let out their first day of school sobs. Other parents and faculty members were there to lend support.

Jen Davies held her composure after dropping her daughter off at her classroom. Then she began talking about what the first day of kindergarten meant to her.

"It's the reality that she's five years old now," she said, while starting to cry. "She's already going to school and she can be away from me, on her own now."

Davies said she was glad that her three-year-old son started preschool last week because she wouldn't be able to handle both in one day.

"Dropping him off was tough, too," she said. "I don't think I could have handled dropping them both off today."

Like Davies, Amy Bratsos is the mother of a preschooler and a kindergartener, but Bratsos sent both of her children off to their first day on Tuesday.

"I don't even know what to do," Brastos said as her eyes started to fill up. "I've been with my children every day for the last six years. Now what am I going to do?"

Colt Andrews School Principal Tracey McGee fielded an assortment of questions from the parents in attendance — about everything from lunch payments to school bus schedules.

"I understand, I just teared up dropping my eleventh grader off at the high school," McGee said reassuringly. "But I promise you that your children are all going to be okay!"
