The school’s Mentoring Club is seeking community members to serve as mentors for the young teens, according to Principal Beth Hayes.

The club is a continuation of the mentoring program started and operated by the Mosaico Community Development Corporation and the Bristol Warren Regional School District in 2003.

Since that pilot program launched 10 years ago, the program has provided mentoring support for more than 400 students. Funds were provided by local and private grants for as many as 25 students at a time, and an after-school Mentoring Club for those students on the wait-list for a mentor.

Funding sources for the mentoring program have dwindled over recent years, according to Diana Campbell, executive director of Mosaico.  As the demands from other organizations and programs for grants have increased, many foundations have not been able to continue to provide the support that Mosaico’s mentoring program needed to continue on its own, she said.

In June, the Mosaico board made the decision to turn the program over to the school district, said Campbell.  Bristol-Warren Superintendent Melinda Thies and Hayes recognized the value of the program to the students at KMS and agreed to take it on, she said.

“Mosaico pledged to continue to support the program by sharing fundraising funds to cover costs of some materials, guest speakers, and field trips,” said Campbell.

Longtime Kickemuit Middle School faculty member Patricia Ryone has been appointed the advisor for the club.
