Bristol-Warren Weekend: Fundraisers, Feasts, Fair

There's exercise, food, and music this weekend in Bristol and Warren.

It's another big weekend in Bristol and Warren for Sept. 27 to 29, with several fundraisers, a tasty time at Mt. Hope Farm, and the opening weekend for the new season at Stone Church Coffeehouse.

And with the weather in Bristol and Warren expected to be sunny with highs in the 60s all weekend and no chance of rain [yet], it's a great chance to get outdoors and enjoy some of these events — click each link for more information.

Friday, Sept. 27:

Historic Linden Place [once home to the DeWolf family] turns the way-back machine to the 1920s for The Big Toast to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State.

Food, wine, beer, plus visiting mixologists — online tickets are $50 each; 21+ only — or, for a limited time, go to Groupon.com for a special 50 percent off ticket price deal, good through Sept. 27. Limit 4.

Saturday, Sept. 28:

Does this crisp weather have you awaking at the crack of dawn? Feel the need to get out and do something?

Get down to Independence Park at 7 a.m. [ugh!] on Saturday morning for an exercise boot camp led by the taskmasters at Bristol Total Fitness. Water provided; liability waiver required.

Come to think of it, that might be just the right warm-up before the St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor Run/Walk begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Walk or run the certified courses [5-mi. run, 3-mi. walk] through scenic Colt State Park.

Run and walk start at 10 a.m., with a family festival to follow at 11.

NBC 10 Chief Meteorologist Mark Searles is this year's honorary chairman of the event.

You could always go the culinary route on Saturday, as Guiteras School hosts its 4th Annual Family Fair in the front yard of the school, starting at 10 a.m.

Check out the vendors and sample tasty treats. Games for the kids, demos by local dance, Zumba, and boxing teams.

After getting a taste of the homemade, trek over to Mt. Hope Farm from 10:30 to noon for a taste of the professional with this week's Chefs at the Market demonstration.

Chef Rizwan Ahmed from Hourglass Brasserie is scheduled to show his preparation for Citrus-cured Sea Scallops with Pickled Beets & Asiago Cheese. Free.

When you need to walk off the food, there's no better setting than Blithewold Mansion, where Curator Margaret Whitehead offers directed tours of Blithewold Mansion starting at 11 a.m.

Adults $16, kids 6 to 17, $5. Member discounts and family packages available. Call (401) 253-2707 for information on reservations.

Wrap Saturday with a lively night of Irish folk at Stone Church Coffeehouse, which kicks off its seventh season with Mike Carroll and The Miller Family

Carroll — longtime friend of Aidan Graham, he of Aidan's Pub fame — is a longtime writer and performer with an impressive list of credits to his name.

Ruby May, Evelyn and Samuel Miller from Smithfield are fresh off the World Irish Dancing Championships in Boston, and bring their multi-instrumental approach to the coffeehouse.

Doors at 6:45, show at 7:30. Tickets are $15 each, students half-price, children 5 and under free. For ticket information or to purchase tickets in advance, please call (401) 253-4813 or (401) 253-7288.

Sunday, Aug. 29:

On Sunday, it's all about barbecue, as two groups in Bristol are hosting times.

Over at the Pete Sepe Pavilion in Warren, the Warren Association of Vietnam Veterans hosts its annual chicken barbecue to raise funds for the chapter's efforts, starting at 1 p.m.

$12 adults, $6 kids. Includes a half chicken, baked potato, sweet corn, cole slaw, and dessert. Cash bar.

And in Bristol, Save Bristol Harbor holds its barbecue and celebration at 1 p.m. to support the work to maintain the harbor.
