I hope the honorable congressman extended an olive branch to the Ambassadors. We have a reputationRead More as being one of the most compassionate states in the country. We hosted people from hurricane Katrina and there is no reason we can't do the same with this humanitarian crisis.

What do you expect from a State Legislature that is more concerned about making Calamari the StateRead More Appetizer than insuring our kids are getting a proper education.

Mentoring Ocean-State July 24, 2014 at 04:42 pm
There is a solution to the state of education in Rhode Island. It is quite apparent that we are notRead More meeting standards and that our children are in need of more support when it comes to their educational success. So where is this support going to come from? As you have quoted in your article, Rhode Island Ranked in Bottom Half of Country in 'Kids Count' Report, "The fact that more Rhode Island children are living in families without a full-time employed parent shows that the negative economic impacts of the recession continue to be felt among Rhode Island families." This idea of economic distress has plagued us for some time now, even with the slight decrease in unemployment rates, we are still not setting up our children and our future for success. I want to call to attention the success of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State. Our continued mentoring efforts pair successful, dedicated mentors with boys and girls throughout Rhode Island between the ages of 7-15. This year alone, 100% of the boys and girls in our mentoring program that have successfully completed the program and are now high school seniors, graduated, most of whom graduated top of their field and class. Not only does having a mentor increase a child’s success but it minimizes the stress that comes along with having parents who are not gainfully employed. It gives the child an opportunity to get out of that everyday environment and allows them to live and experience something they normally wouldn’t have. They are given an opportunity to grow a new professional network and gain new and useful life skills they may not have had without their mentor. The organization proves that taking the 6-8 hours a month to enrich the life of a young person really works and is incredibly effective. Looking to the future of the organization, we are seeing more and more educational success each year. Next year the numbers of boys and girls who will be graduating seniors will grow considerably and they will all be set for success because of their mentor. In reality, this is the answer to our educational prayers. It is a proven method to ensure the success of our future. This is the time, now more than ever, for the men and women of Rhode Island to step up and become the change that these children and our state desperately needs. Sincerely, George Evans Marley Community Outreach Specialist Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State

lol...I was wondering same thing, Keith Lucy; why would anyone care who gets their blood, as long asRead More they NEED it. Here's one for you on-the-fencers; a veteran nurse once told me that one pint of blood can service up to FIVE (5) premature babies. That should be enough fodder to push you into a Red Cross blood drive.
David July 24, 2014 at 09:05 pm
The point...Keith and sph...is that this patch crap posts the same stuff regional. RI gets its bloodRead More from the RI Blood Center and when Red Cross swoops in the blood goes anywhere. RI ends up with shortages and the needs here get tight. I don't care who gets the blood and encourage any able bodied person to donate. That was an FYI for anyone from RI reading this post that may think that they are helping in RI when they are not. And yes...when Mass calls for blood from the RI Blood Center and they are able to they send it. Same goes for when people donate after a tragedy thinking they are directly helping. They are not. A lot of the blood ends up going bad because they get too much. If called they will always ask you to donate year round and avoid the urge to 'help' during a tragedy. Just call and ask and they will tell you that...ANY blood center.

I still find it interesting that back in the 40's and 50's we had heavy rains and the beaches didRead More not close. We are still alive for the most part. Is the State giving you folks a long life? New limits on stuff in the water are a waste of your tax payers money. No problem at Eastons but Atlantic beach in Middletown has a problem. Could it possibly be that they still have not cleaned up the water from the moat that naturally flows alonge the middletown shore there. Watch the seaweed flow...that was there back long ago to! If you swim when the beach is closed does a State Trooper wade out into the surf and arrest you?
