It's best to leave the explosions to the professionals. If you light your own, be sure to take precautions and keep the kids away.

The Fourth of July is drawing near and the celebration is underway, especially in America's Most Patriotic Town. While many enjoy celebrating the holiday by lighting off fireworks, when there are kids around, it may be best to leave the explosions to the experts. While the incendiary devices can be dangerous to anyone, children and teens are often the victims. Their eyes are among the most frequently injured, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Red, White and Blue Could Mean Green

The "Proud to be an American" house decorating contest starts next week.

Deck the house and win some cash for your patriotic spirit. The "Proud to be an American" house decorating contest is back, and this year it's open to all Bristol residents. The Bristol 4th of July Committee removed the $5 entry fee, opening all towns to the contest. You don't even need to enter. Just make yours the most Patriotic house or business on the block and you might get a check for $100, $75 or $50. "It's not a fundraiser. It's just something really fun," said coordinator Ann Soscia. "We only had about 30 entries last year, and some of the homes that should have been recognied weren't." A team of volunteers will be roaming the town's streets seeking candidates beginning June 30 and continuing through July 1. The winners will be …

4th Photo Contest Winners Displayed

The remaining two categories are now on display at Paper Packaging and Panache.

Independence Day is approaching and Bristol is preparing to celebrate. Among the early events is the annual photo contest. After the entries have been scrutinized by professional photographers, the Fourt of July Committee has made its picks. Several amateur shutterbugs from throughout the region have earned bragging rights and some exposure as their works are displayed in the front windows of Paper Packaging and Panache. The top three in the "Celebrations" and "Creative" categories are now displayed. The winners in the "Patriotic," "Nature" and "Bristol" categories have been on display in the wondows of Rogers Free Library.
