Homemade Blowtorch Leads to Arson Charge

The following is based on reports from the Bristol Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A Bristol man who fashioned a blowtorch out of an aerosol can and a lighter and allegedly set fire to a multi-family home has been charged with first degree arson. Officers took Carlos Aponte, 18, of 9 West St., Apt. 2S, into custody May 12 after responding to calls of a small fire in the basement of the multi-family home. Other tenants had called the Bristol Fire Department after smelling smoke coming from the basement. The fire marshal and Bristol police officers responded to the scene, and learned from tenants that Aponte often smokes cigarettes in the basement, according to Deputy Chief Stephen Contente.  Aponte, who had left the scene of the fire, was arrested when he returned home later that night. Bristol, Warren Police Collecting Unused Prescriptions on Saturday

The two local departments are participating in tomorrow's "Prescription Drug Take Back Day," scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm.

  The Bristol Police Department and Warren Police Department will once again take part in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, scheduled for Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm at each town's police headquarters. According to Rhode Island Atty. Gen. Peter Kilmartin, Rhode Islanders have disposed of more than 6,000 pounds of prescription drugs since the program began in 2010. Kilmartin noted that abuse of prescription drugs "is becoming an epidemic" in Rhode Island, and is listed as the number-one cause of death in the state. “The non-medical use of prescription drugs is a growing public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse. Bristol PD: NJ Man Fled Bar, 'Mooned' Cops

Bristol Police allege that Charles Woods, of Demarest, NJ, fled from a local bar after a disturbance and vandalized a holding cell at the police station.

  A New Jersey man is due for a pretrial hearing on March 29 following his March 8 arrest for causing trouble at a local bar and vandalizing a Bristol Police station holding cell. Local officers arrested Charles Woods, of Demarest, NJ, on one count each of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and two counts of vandalism on March 8 at 12:30 am following a reported disturbance at the British Beer Company on State Street. According to police reports, officers found Woods at Colt Andrews School, after a bartender told them that Woods had fled the scene. While in holding cell 2 at the station, Woods put his shirt in the toilet and later threw the wet shirt against the door, according to police reports. Officers also reported seeing Woods …

Officers spoke with the driver of the car, who was looking for their lost dog. Officers reported finding a car with two slashed tires on Rover Street on March 1 at about 7:30 am. A resident of Washington Street reported the apparent thieft of a flagpole on March 1 at about 11 am. The car belonging to a resident of Addy Drive was apparently egged between 9 pm on March 1 and 4 am on March 2, when the owner discovered the apparent …

Bristol Police Stop House Party; 9 Charged

Seven Massachusetts residents were among the suspects charged on March 3 just after midnight.

  Bristol Police this week charged nine men between the ages of 19 and 22 with underage drinking and serving alcohol to minors after officers responded to a house party on Shaws Lane on March 3 just after midnight. Reports indicate that officers called the Roger Williams University shuttle service to pick up some of the students found at the party. Charged with underage possession of alcohol were: Officers also charged the following with serving alcohol to minors: All nine received summonses to appear at future hearings to be scheduled.
