Poll: Should EZ-Pass Get a Tax Break?

State Rep. Stephen Ucci (D-Johnston, Cranston), with the support of Rep. Richard P. Morrison (D-Bristol, Warren), has proposed a bill to give holders of EZ-Pass accounts a tax credit — what do you think?

A Johnston legislator has proposed a tax credit to EZ-Pass account holders who use the electronic payment system to cross the Newport Bridge and several local representatives are on board. Rep. Stephen R. Ucci (D-Johnston, Cranston) said in a press release that the bill is meant to help drivers recover some of the cost of using the Newport Bridge. "It’s an added expense to have to travel across a toll bridge constantly," Ucci explained. "Some of these folks have to use their EZ-Pass five days per week just to get to and from work. In this economy, everyone needs a little extra assistance and this specific population of people is getting hammered with fees." According to the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority website, Rhode Island …

Facebook Page Created to Oppose Sakonnet Bridge Tolls

The page's message seeks effort to fight "this shortsighted tax on our communities."

Opposition continues to build in the East Bay against proposed tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge. The latest effort happened Monday, when the "No Tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge" Facebook page launched. The administrator, Christy Nadalin of Bristol, said Thursday she's looking to make everyone aware of the situation. As of 5 p.m. Thursday the page had 25 "likes." Currently, Gov. Lincoln Chafee's budget calls to transfer ownership of the Sakonnet River Bridge from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation(RIDOT) to the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RIBTA). In a move to create a new revenue stream for fiscally-strapped Rhode Island, putting tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge has been proposed if RITBA maintains it. …

Letter: Bridge Tolls Will Drive Stake Through Heart of East Bay Economy

A Letter to the Editor from Bristol's Chuck Millard regarding the recent proposed tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge.

Governor Chafee and the DOT are about to drive a stake through the heart of the East Bay economy.   Make no mistake about it if they succeed in setting up tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge potential visitors from South Eastern MA and Tiverton will change their shopping patterns.  Impulse visits to our community will drop off precipitously. Tourists are not going to shell out $8.00 to have an ice cream at the Daily Scoop and stroll through our shops.  They are not going to 'hop over to the Pot' for drinks or get a bite at Roberto's. Visitors from MA will not be able to buy the discounted transponders and will have to pay the full freight. Our museums will suffer.  Who is going to pile their family in the car and come to Bristol for a hike …

Bristol Businesses Feel Financial Pinch From Construction

Local business owners say they see a difference in sales and daily customers since the one-way roads were implemented and construction began.

Just one week in to the changed traffic patterns and Department of Transportation construction, several businesses located in downtown Bristol say their shops are feeling the pinch. "The traffic is definitely affecting our business," said Barry Schrutt, owner of Photo World, located on Hope Street. "You have to really want to come out to come down here." For a business that has been struggling to stay afloat during trying economic times, Schrutt says now is no time to slow down business. "I understand why they have to do the construction this time of year but the businesses are just coming out of the winter, which is about five bad months of business," Schrutt says. "Now we're going to go into several more months of bad business in a time …

Poll: What Do You Think of Hope, Thames Street One-Ways?

Thames and Hope Streets are officially one way roads through the summer. What do you think of it?

On Monday, Thames and Hope Streets officially turned over to one way roads and will remain one way through the summer while the Department of Transportation works on the Hope Street Project. Below, see what residents are saying about the new one ways. Billy Lytle: Fine the way it was but I am open to chaaaaange Steve Martel: I like it Jennifer DeGaetano: They took out 2 stop signs on Thames Street. Candace Casala: I like it. I hope Warren does it! For those who think it will be difficult to get to businesses along Hope St. obviously have not driven downtown this week. There is an abundance of parking on BOTH sides of the street. I hope businesses do not suffer because people can't follow directions. I'm sure there will be issues with those who don't pay attention to the signs but we will have a much better road surface, nicer sidewalks and…   more ›

Hope Street Project Will Change Traffic Patterns on Hope, Thames Streets

The changes will start on Monday, April 2.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) announced on Tuesday that it will temporarily change the traffic patterns on Hope Street and Thames Street in downtown Bristol to establish two one-way roads. The new traffic patterns are scheduled to go into effect on Monday, April 2, and motorists may encounter delays due to re-striping operations beginning at 8 pm on Sunday, April 1. The new traffic patterns will remain in place until the Hope Street Improvement Project is completed in late summer. Although the project has been under construction since last summer, the remaining work, combined with the narrow roadway, would take longer and be more disruptive if the Department left Hope Street two-way during reconstruction. RIDOT …

Multiple Vehicle Accident Backs Up Traffic On Metacom Avenue

The accident has caused traffic backup in Bristol.

Update: Shortly after we posted this story, a Patch user who witnessed the accident shared her story on our Facebook page. Below you can find the comment from Nancy Securo- Gibbemeyer and the original article.  "I was right in back of the last vehicle and was fortunate to have my wits about me so that I didn't stop short, but went a bit into the oncoming lane to get around the truck. If I hadn't been paying attention, I would have been the 5th car in that pileup. I think most were ok except for the older man in the truck. Hope everyone makes a quick recovery. Jesus took the wheel for me. Thank you, Lord..." Around 12:15 pm on Sunday afternoon, several vehicles were involved in an accident on Metacom Avenue in Bristol. Just after the …

Rep. Morrison Introduces Bill To Dissolve Turnpike and Bridge Authority

The bill would place the new Turnpike and Bridge Division under the direction of an assistant director at DOT.

The Rhode Island General Assembly recently announced a new piece of legislation introduced by Rep. Richard Morrison. The bill would essentially dissolve the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority and move all of its projects to be handled by a division of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. The following is the official release from the Rhode Island General Assembly: If shrinking government and making it more efficient can save taxpayer money, Rep. Richard P. Morrison (D-Dist. 68, Bristol, Warren) has a suggestion about where to start. He has introduced legislation that will dissolve the quasi-public Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, moving all its duties and functions to the RI Department of Transportation in a …

This is more about Rep. Morrison keeping tolls off the Mt Hope Bridge than anything. If he were sincere, he's realize that the bridges that RITBA care for are in good shape, with ongoing maintenance, and the maintenance is paid for. As a quasi-public entity, they are less apt to be pushed around by the short-sighted, self-serving clowns on Smith Hill. On the other hand, DOT bridges are dangerous…   more ›
