Get School Closing Text Alerts

The Rhode Island Broadcasters Association provides a system for smartphone users to receive school cancellation and other notices via text message.

With the possibility of Hurricane Sandy hitting Rhode Island next week — and the potential for school closings — parents [and students] will be looking for the quickest and easiest way to know whether their school is affected. The Rhode Island Broadcasting Association has the answer with its text alert web page, allowing computer and mobile phone users to sign up for text message and email alerts. Rhode Island school districts, including the Bristol-Warren Regional School District and private schools are included in the RIBA list. To sign up, users are required to provide a name and ZIP code, as well as a phone number or email address. The system will then send a test email or text message, and in the case of text messages, include a code…

Letter: Level-funding May Spur Lawsuit

School Committee members express support for the school district's efforts to receive greater investment from Warren.

Fellow Warren residents and taxpayers, We, the Warren representatives of the Bristol-Warren Regional School Committee, wanted to take this time to address the school-related issues that have been discussed in our local newspapers, social media sites and coffee houses. While we recognize that the town of Warren is in a tough financial state, it is important to provide some facts to counteract the misconceptions that are out there so that we can all make informed decisions at the Warren Town Financial Meeting at Kickemuit Middle School on May 21.  Regarding the Regionalization Bonus, the BW Regional School District did receive additional funds from the state when the two towns regionalized. This was meant to be a short-term funding source to…

Will someone please make sense out of the statement that if we vote against the increase in taxes and win when it goes to court, we will then see a decrease of 14 cents in our taxes. The Town of Warren is broke as the council states, so we can not afford a ball field at Jamiels park, we can not clean the sand from the streets, we can not fix the current ball fields, we can not take the snow off …   more ›

Things To Do On Spring Break

Spring Break is here, now what should you do with all that extra free time?

School is out, now what can you do with the kids? Well, the weather should be great this week, so why not grab a slush at the newly opened Del's Lemonade, teach the kids how to swing at the driving range on Market Street, or practice their baseball skills at one of Bristol or Warren's local parks? If the outdoors isn't your thing, try your hand at bowling down at Dudek (and don't forget to grab a coffee cabinet while you're at it!), or maybe some indoor mini golf at Monster Mini Golf in East Providence. But if you're looking for some community programs going on during the week, check out the schedule below. Did we miss an amazing program? Let us know in the comments section! Monday, April 16 Tuesday,  April 17  Wednesday, April 18 Thursday…

KMS Students Collect Money, Canned Goods for Soup Kitchen

Students donated 300 canned goods and $200 in cash to the Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen.

On Friday, April 6th, two representatives from the Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen came to visit students in Jeff Grifka and Bonnie Pansa's advisory classes at the Kickemuit Middle School. As part of the Alan Shawn Feinstein Challenge to Fight Hunger, students sold soup to faculty and staff to raise money for canned goods for the soup kitchen throughout February and March. Among the many varieties of soup the students made and sold were corn and kielbasa chowder, clam chowder, bean and kale and matzo ball soup. From the soup sale, also know as "Soupapalooza," the students were able to make a donation of 300 canned goods and $200 in cash. Warren Council Seeks Equality on Joint Finance Committee

The Warren Town Council approved the FY13 budget with level funding to the school district and made a motion to explore options to change the current Joint Finance Committee legislation.

On Tuesday evening, the Warren Town Council approved the FY13 town budget and made a motion to look into changing current legislation that dictates the amount of power of the town of Warren has in votes made on the Joint Finance Committee. "We want to design a baseline change to the enabling legislation to either give us one more vote or at lease change the complexity of the three votes that we have," said Council President Chris Stanley. Stanley said he hopes that by pushing for a change in the legislation, the members of the Joint Finance Committee can come to "a real compromise as opposed to a split 6/3 vote down town lines." According to the current legislation, the Joint Finance Committee is comprised of nine voting members appointed …

It seems to me that 21 cents per thousand is not something we should worry about if this amount would end the battle of the Towns as to the School Department, its the fact that the School Comittee with 6 votes from Bristol and only 3 from Warren is the problem. Without an equel vote how much will Bristol want next year. Warren, is doing the right thing by refussing to pay. With no jobs, and …   more ›

Hugh Cole Students Sworn in as School Safety Patrol

Nearly 30 students were sworn in by Warren Police Lt. Roland Brule on Thursday morning.

On Thursday morning, Hugh Cole School students were sown into their new Safety Patrol positions by a member of the Warren Police Department. Lt. Roland Brule led nearly 30 fourth and fith graders through the oath during an assembly in front of students and parents. The students, selected by the school's administrators, are responsible for ensuring the safety of their peers when starting and ending the school day. "It's a big deal for the students," said one of Hugh Cole's Principals, Cindy Sadler. According to Sadler, the program started years ago but fell on the backburner. This year, the school decided to resurrect the program to give fourth and fifth graders recognition and teach them responsibility. "They will be the first ones off the…
