Joint Finance Committee OKs Lower Budget; Video from Meeting Online

The regional board approved a budget that is about $300,000 less than the current spending plan.

In the face of a roughly $740,000 loss in state funding under Gov. Lincoln Chafee's proposed budget for fiscal 2014, the Bristol-Warren Joint Finance Committee approved about a $300,000 reduction in school costs for next year. The video from last week's JFC session, held at Mt. Hope High School, has been posted online by the Bristol-Warren School District. Running just under 90 minutes, the video shows the budget presentation by Supt. Melinda Thies and brief remarks by members of the JFC and Bristol resident Nina Murphy before the JFC takes a unanimous vote on the $53.7-million spending plan. Bristol Town Councilor Halsey Herreshoff — whose town's share of the budget would increase by about $817,000 to just over $22 million — is shown …

Why Are Bristol-Warren Schools Closed Friday?

Schools will be closed for the day on March 8. Find out why...

Students in Bristol-Warren public schools will get a long weekend starting March 8, as the regional school district has a professional development day scheduled. The school department calendar lists Friday as the last of three "PD Days" held during the 2012-13 school year. Friday is also one of two scheduled days off for the district; the other is Good Friday, which this year falls on March 29. [And for parents — and kids — wondering about the next vacation week, it's scheduled for April 15 to 19.]

Who Will Elucubrate a Victory Tonight?

The Bristol-Warren School District holds its annual Spelling Bee tonight at Kickemuit Middle School.

[Wondering what 'elucubrate' means? Answer at the bottom of this article.] It may not be televised on ESPN like the national contest, but there's sure to be plenty of excitement at tonight's Bristol-Warren School District Spelling Bee, scheduled for 6:30 pm at Kickemuit Middle School. Letter: Level-funding May Spur Lawsuit

School Committee members express support for the school district's efforts to receive greater investment from Warren.

Fellow Warren residents and taxpayers, We, the Warren representatives of the Bristol-Warren Regional School Committee, wanted to take this time to address the school-related issues that have been discussed in our local newspapers, social media sites and coffee houses. While we recognize that the town of Warren is in a tough financial state, it is important to provide some facts to counteract the misconceptions that are out there so that we can all make informed decisions at the Warren Town Financial Meeting at Kickemuit Middle School on May 21.  Regarding the Regionalization Bonus, the BW Regional School District did receive additional funds from the state when the two towns regionalized. This was meant to be a short-term funding source to…

Will someone please make sense out of the statement that if we vote against the increase in taxes and win when it goes to court, we will then see a decrease of 14 cents in our taxes. The Town of Warren is broke as the council states, so we can not afford a ball field at Jamiels park, we can not clean the sand from the streets, we can not fix the current ball fields, we can not take the snow off …   more ›
