Joint Finance Committee OKs Lower Budget; Video from Meeting Online
The regional board approved a budget that is about $300,000 less than the current spending plan.
In the face of a roughly $740,000 loss in state funding under Gov. Lincoln Chafee's proposed budget for fiscal 2014, the Bristol-Warren Joint Finance Committee approved about a $300,000 reduction in school costs for next year. The video from last week's JFC session, held at Mt. Hope High School, has been posted online by the Bristol-Warren School District. Running just under 90 minutes, the video shows the budget presentation by Supt. Melinda Thies and brief remarks by members of the JFC and Bristol resident Nina Murphy before the JFC takes a unanimous vote on the $53.7-million spending plan. Students in Bristol-Warren public schools will get a long weekend starting March 8, as the regional school district has a professional development day scheduled. The school department calendar lists Friday as the last of three "PD Days" held during the 2012-13 school year. Friday is also one of two scheduled days off for the district; the other is Good Friday, which this year falls on March 29. [And for parents — and kids — wondering about the next vacation week, it's scheduled for April 15 to 19.]

The Bristol-Warren School District holds its annual Spelling Bee tonight at Kickemuit Middle School.

Bristol-Warren Teacher Named Portsmouth Principal
The Portsmouth School Committee made two leadership appointments Tuesday night, including a hire for a brand new position.
Hugh Cole Elementary School teacher Elizabeth Viveiros will be heading across the bridge after this school year after being named principal of Portsmouth's Melville Elementary School. The Portsmouth School Committee unanimously appointed Viveiros, along with a new fourth/fifth grade Portsmouth Middle School assistant principal. Viveiros is currently a principal intern and second-grade teacher at Hugh Cole Elementary School in the Bristol-Warren Regional School District. Viveiros has been employed by the Bristol-Warren school district since 1999, where she has worked as both a special education inclusion and regular education teacher. Fellow Warren residents and taxpayers, We, the Warren representatives of the Bristol-Warren Regional School Committee, wanted to take this time to address the school-related issues that have been discussed in our local newspapers, social media sites and coffee houses. Will someone please make sense out of the statement that if we vote against the increase in taxes and win when it goes to court, we will then see a decrease of 14 cents in our taxes.
