Students churn out ceramic dinnerware at annual throw-a-thon.
“People, I want mugs!" said Mt. Hope High School art teacher Kerry Sloat. "And handles! Who can make handles?" Against a backdrop of upbeat music, Sloat was supervising 25 pizza-filled art students as they turned lumps of clay into plates, bowls, mugs, butter dishes, napkin holders and other functional dinnerware for the annual "Throw-a-thon" last Friday. Their nine hours of work will ultimately result in more than 100 pieces for sale at the school's annual Arts Night on May 17. Proceeds will benefit the Womens Resource Center, which assists survivors of domestic abuse. Typically the "Throw-a-thon" raises between $500 and $600, but have been as high as $900. Sloat got the idea for the event after attending a national arts educators …

Look out art world, there are some rising stars in the midst.
Five Mt. Hope High School students won awards in the annual Rhode Island Scholastics statewide competition that honors excellence in visual arts. Their work, along with nearly 200 others, is currently part of an exhibition co-hosted by the Rhode Island Art Education Association at Salve Regina University’s Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery through February 6. Statewide, each art teacher was allowed to submit up to five student artworks. Entrants were judged blindly by local art professionals using the criteria of “originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal vision or voice.” Student work that won Gold Key awards will go on to the regional competition in New York. Winning students were also invited to attend workshops with …

Art and function combine for perfect holiday gift.
At Mudstone Studio's Holiday Sale on Sunday, Dec. 5, visitors could not only meet the artists, but also have a peek at the studio and school where much of the work was made. Bags of clay, kilns, carving tools, and throwing wheels gave the artwork a context while providing an air of authenticity. Two artists gave live demonstrations during the event, ceramicist Josh Leonti and glass artist Dan Ottone. Families and attendants were able to watch the process of creation, while chatting with each of them about their work. For Leonti there was also another benefit. "I'm more comfortable sitting behind the wheel and talking about my work than standing next to it while it's on a pedestal," he said, smiling. Nearby, Jessica Kenyon's "functional-…
