Some 380 local kids will get a bit of Christmas cheer this year, courtesy of the dedicated volunteers who organized the "Giving Tree' toy distribution at the East Bay Food Pantry.
On Wednesday morning, Dec. 19, a small team of volunteers readied piles of gifts for distribution to local families and their children from the Franklin Court Community Center, above the East Bay Food Pantry Franklin Street in Bristol. Kara Rocha, Lauren Martel, and Nicki Tyska — who led the effort among about 10 local businesses, and purchased some of the gifts for the drive — were making final preparations before opening the doors of the center at 11 am. Dyan Vaughan, who alerted Bristol-Warren Patch to the event, explained that the trio "went above and beyond this year, taking care of many kids themselves." Vaughan estimated that 380 local children will be receiving gifts through the efforts of Rocha, Martel, and Tyska. Watch the …

The East Bay Food Pantry held their first of a series of healthy cooking classes on Friday, Feb. 10 at Franklin Court. The class, taught by Heidi Hetzler, MS, RD, LDN who is the Program Coordinator with the USDA SNAP-Education Department, aims to prove how easy it is to prepare a delicious and nutritious meal with the types of ingredients that are available on food pantry's shelves. On Friday, the group watched as Hetzler prepared a pasta with greens and beans dinner using simple ingredients like whole wheat pasta, canned tomatoes, spinach and beans (see .Pdf for recipe). In addition to sampling the food, attendees also received a bag containing all of the ingredients to make the recipe at home. The bags were provided by the East Bay …

More than 200 children in the East Bay will have gifts under the Christmas tree thanks to donations from area residents.
With the help of donations from residents from all over the East Bay and two special Bristol volunteers, the East Bay Food Pantry had another successful year aiding less fortunate families for the holidays. Not only did the East Bay Food Pantry help to give food to hundreds of families for Christmas dinner, but it also served as an outlet to provide approximately 285 local children with gifts to open on Christmas morning. A few months ago, Bristol residents Dyan Vaughan and her daughter, Cara Beller, began organizing their annual holiday giving tree drive to benefit families who utilize the food pantry. Over the last decade, the mother-daughter duo have noticed that the need for gifts for children in the East Bay has rapidly increased. …

Toy donations must be in by Dec. 16.
Two local residents and the East Bay Food Pantry are seeking toy donations from the community to make the holiday season a little brighter for less fortunate children in the East Bay. Dyan Vaughan and her daughter, Cara Beller, have helped local children since 1999, but this year, the mother daughter duo have teamed up with the East Bay Food Pantry to coordinate a giving tree drive to help carry the burden of gift giving for hundreds of needy families in the East Bay. "It started as a service project for my daughter, Cara, when she was in 8th grade," she said, noting that Cara is now 25 and they still carry on the tradition. "It was so rewarding, so we just kept doing it every year after that." This year, the donations will go to children …

The East Bay Food Pantry handed out baskets and boxes of food for the second annual Holiday Basket Program on Monday, Nov. 22. Last year the Holiday Basket Program provided Thanksgiving baskets to 39 families. This year, the program helped supply nearly 300 families in the East Bay area with food for the holidays. "I feel very bitter sweet about it," said Executive Director Anita Randall. "I'm glad we are here doing the work, but it is so sad to see that people are really struggling. There are signs elsewhere that things are getting better, but that doesn't seem to be the case in Rhode Island." Starting at 10am, the line of people picking up baskets had spilled out the door and around the corner on to the sidewalk. Margaret, of Bristol, …
