Academy Students Learn Life Skills in New Bristol Store

Bristol's Sports Exchange helps students learn vocational and life skills.

Heather Tolan and Cassie Tucker had never considered golf gear before starting to work at Bristol’s Sports Exchange. “Now we know the difference between drivers and wedges,” said Tolan. “And irons!” added Tucker. The two 19-year-old Tiverton girls are students at the East Bay Transitional Academy, a skill-building program that helps 18- to 21 year-olds join the work force or prepare students to attend a college or trade school. Warren's East Bay Educational Collaborative funds both the Academy and The Sports Exchange, which accepts consigned and donated sporting goods from hockey sticks and ice skates to books, treadmills, jerseys and more. Number of Gym Goers Increase With 'New Year, New Body' Mentality

Local gym owners see an increase in active members after the New Year.

Holly Williams is going for a “bikini bod.” Her fiancée, Damien St. Pierre, has relinquished the dream of six-pack abs, but is still working hard to shape up. The pair head to Cancun in August for their honeymoon, but in the meanwhile are busy working out at Bristol Total Fitness. “I’ve been on and off,” said Williams on her attempts to stay on track at the gym. “I could come four days a week then take three weeks off. I’m trying to get back to four day weeks and stick with it.” Her fiancée, however, admits to pushing himself a bit more. “After New Year’s I started coming in two times a day,” St. Pierre said. “We’re trying to make sure we keep it up.” Williams and St. Pierre are among the huge surge of returning members and new members …
