Hope Gallery Features Roger Williams University Student Artists

Twenty RWU students are participating in a juried show at Hope Gallery in Bristol.

Twenty Roger Williams University students majoring in the visual arts are currently involved in a juried exhibition at Hope Gallery in Bristol. The show opened with a reception last Saturday evening and will be up through May 17. RWU Associate Professor of Art and Visual Studies Program Coordinator Michael Rich, a nationally recognized painter, oversaw the selection of small works.  “This is a survey and a sampling of the range of work done in the program,” Rich said. “We’re interdisciplinary-based, but we don’t focus too heavily on any one medium. We ask the students to be flexible, and challenge them on context and media.” Indeed, the artists are using everything from carbon paper to burlap in their quest for expression. Many of them, …

Pictures Worth 1,000 Words at Bristol Art Museum

Six notable artists in upcoming ‘Word Transformed’ exhibition.

A new exhibit at the Bristol Art Museum features artwork inspired by text and the written word. ‘Word Transformed’ kicks off with a wine and cheese reception on Sunday, Feb. 27, from 2-5 p.m. According to curator Mary Dondero, a Warren based artist and graphic designer, the show “explores how language can be presented in different ways.” The six featured artists utilize text and words in vastly different ways. Arlene McGonagle creates “basket sculptures” that contain text from her journals using fiber, copper and aluminum. Will Ashford takes pages from Ralph Waldo Emerson books and transforms them into images. Tyson Jacques enlarges peoples’ handwriting into abstract portrait paintings. Mercedes Mary Ruefle, a nationally recognized poet, …

The Picture Place Becomes Main Street Gallery

Warren business changes name to help reach customer base.

In keeping up with our shifting economic times, photographer and gallery owner Lane Poor has rebranded his business in downtown Warren. What used to be called The Picture Place is now Main Street Gallery. Poor says The Picture Place needed a new name since customers typically thought it was a frame shop and not a fine art gallery. The Picture Place officially opens as Main Street Gallery Saturday, Feb. 26, at noon, with a festive opening reception from 7-9 p.m. The inaugural exhibition features Poor’s own nature photography, featuring images of local flora and fauna, and works by beloved local painter Richard Kaiser, best known for his Bristol 4th of July paintings. The show will be up for four weeks and therafter Poor says the gallery …

Their work, along with nearly 200 others, is currently part of an exhibition co-hosted by the Rhode Island Art Education Association at Salve Regina University’s Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery through February 6. Statewide, each art teacher was allowed to submit up to five student artworks. Entrants were judged blindly by local art professionals using the criteria of  “originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal vision or voice.” Student work that won Gold Key awards will go on to the regional competition in New York. Winning students were also invited to attend workshops with …
