Christmas Decorations: Is It Time They Come Down?

When do you remove Santa from the front yard: January or July?

Is it too early to take down the Christmas decorations?  Some families traditionally take down their holiday decorations on New Year's Day, while others wait until much later in the month and much, much later, too.  On Tuesday, the Christmas trees that were placed next to everyone's green bins full of wrapping paper made it apparent that many people had spent the long weekend cleaning up and gearing up for a new year.  On Facebook, we asked users when they plan to take down their decorations. A few agreed that the first week in January is a good time to pack it up for the year and another user expressed his frustration that stores have long since packed up everything Christmas related and are already pushing Valentines Day items.  But we …

Locals Take a Cold Dip in the Bay

The 1st Annual Winter Wish Swim drew a crowd to Bristol Town Beach.

A large group of scantily clad locals started off 2012 with a shock to the system as they dipped into the frigid waters of the bay on New Year’s Day morning at Bristol Town Beach. Though some had come on their own, most were there for the 1st annual Winter Wish Swim 2012, a fundraiser benefiting Children’s Wishes, a Warwick-based non-profit that grants wishes to Rhode Island children with life-threatening illnesses.  Executive Director Dana Hrabcsak, who founded Children’s Wishes two years ago, collected $20 donations from participants and handed out mugs, while Ben DeCastro, promotions director at Cardi’s Furniture, gave out brochures about the organization. DeCastro said Cardi’s has supported the organization at various fundraisers, and …

Planning on "Tipsy Tow" for New Year's Eve? Not in Rhode Island

Programs offering free rides in some areas are not available in the state.

You may have seen it on Facebook. "No excuses, folks. Don't drink and drive-and don't ride with anybody who does. Tipsy Tow offered by AAA: You don't have to be a AAA member, from 6pm-6am on New Year's Eve/Day they will take your drunk self and your car home for FREE. Save this number... 1-800-222-4357. Please re-post this if you don't mind" The message went viral this week, posted on Facebook pages and shared on sites across the country. The problem is, the service is not available in all areas. In fact, according to the AAA website, clubs in only 17 states are offering the free rides home and no programs in the New England region make the list. An additional "AAA Justice Link" website lists outside resources aimed at reducing drunk …

Appetizers to Give Your Party Real Flavor

These recipes are taste-tested favorites that will have your guests asking for the recipe after the first mouthful.

You told your friends and family that you would host a New Year's Eve party this year. Now what? What do you serve to eat? You don't want to just dump some chips into a bowl for dipping into store-bought packaged dips, do you? You want to make a real splash and have them coming back for more, don't you? Here are a few appetizer recipes that can give your party some zip. I pulled the first one from the stack of recipes in my own kitchen. I got it from a colleague a few years ago, who got it from her mom. So you know it's good. Cook-extraordinaire Linda Lee of Barrington provided the others for a column she wrote last year for Patch. Each is uh-umh good! You will not go wrong, believe me! Black Bean Ole Dip Ingredients: One brick of softened…

Do You Remember the Blizzard of 2010?

This Christmas week has been much milder (and drier) than last year.

The past few days have been pretty mild in Bristol and Warren, but last year at this time many residents were still snow blowing and shoveling themselves out of their homes. Do you remember what you were doing on the days following Christmas of 2010? How long did it take you to clean up nature's winter wonderland? Share your photos and memories in the comments section!
