The nearly 700 preschool through grade 5 children of Hugh Cole are in need of diverse and safe areas for sport and play. Over the last three years, a dedicated group of parents, teachers, administrators and children have been working hard to raise the money required to rehabilitate the playground areas of the property. We are in the final phase of fundraising and are reaching out to you with hope that the citizens of Warren and Bristol will help us over the top. The lack of appropriate playground equipment and play areas on the property serves to limit the opportunities for constructive play and diminishes the ability of the physical education teachers to lead the children in activities. I am the mother of Bryce, a loving and kind 7-year-old who attends Hugh Cole School and was diagnosed last year with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Children with this diagnosis need patient, caring and loving educators who recognize how difficult it is for children with this disorder to focus in a stimuli-rich classroom environment. My biggest concern as a parent was that his teachers might not be attentive to his unique challenges, and unfortunately, my fears were realized during his kindergarten experience last school year. The Portsmouth School Committee made two leadership appointments Tuesday night, including a hire for a brand new position.
Hugh Cole Elementary School teacher Elizabeth Viveiros will be heading across the bridge after this school year after being named principal of Portsmouth's Melville Elementary School. The Portsmouth School Committee unanimously appointed Viveiros, along with a new fourth/fifth grade Portsmouth Middle School assistant principal. Viveiros is currently a principal intern and second-grade teacher at Hugh Cole Elementary School in the Bristol-Warren Regional School District. Viveiros has been employed by the Bristol-Warren school district since 1999, where she has worked as both a special education inclusion and regular education teacher.
