I am the mother of Bryce, a loving and kind 7-year-old who attends Hugh Cole School and was diagnosed last year with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Children with this diagnosis need patient, caring and loving educators who recognize how difficult it is for children with this disorder to focus in a stimuli-rich classroom environment. My biggest concern as a parent was that his teachers might not be attentive to his unique challenges, and unfortunately, my fears were realized during his kindergarten experience last school year. Nearly 30 students were sworn in by Warren Police Lt. Roland Brule on Thursday morning.
On Thursday morning, Hugh Cole School students were sown into their new Safety Patrol positions by a member of the Warren Police Department. Lt. Roland Brule led nearly 30 fourth and fith graders through the oath during an assembly in front of students and parents. The students, selected by the school's administrators, are responsible for ensuring the safety of their peers when starting and ending the school day. "It's a big deal for the students," said one of Hugh Cole's Principals, Cindy Sadler. According to Sadler, the program started years ago but fell on the backburner. The Hugh Cole School PTO would like to thank everyone for their support , volunteerism and donations.
On Saturday, March 24, students and their families and friends flocked to the Fifth Annual High Cole School Spring Fair. Families spent the afternoon buying Girl Scout Cookies, browsing items from local vendors, taking photos with Paws (the Pawsox mascot) and learning dance steps. The event also supports the community with food collections for the Hugh Cole School food bank, and by collecting items to make care packages for soldiers overseas. This year COZ joined in to help raise money and collect blankets and towels for the animal shelter. Hugh Cole PTO Melanie Michaud says the event went very well. The spring fair will be held on Saturday, March 24, from 10 am to 3 pm.
Residents, students and their families are invited to the Annual Hugh Cole School Community Spring Fair on Saturday, March 24. The family friendly event will take place at Hugh Cole School from 10 am to 3 pm. The fair, sponsored by the Hugh Cole School parent group, will feature more than 40 vendors, non-profit groups, raffles, games and food. According to parent group member Melanie Michaud, many new attractions have been added to the 2012 school fair, including an inflatable obstacle course, an appearance by "Paws" from the Paw Sox, a performance and tips from Just Dance! dancers for the kids and chair massages for the adults. Proceeds from the fair support the school and their efforts to fund phase three of their playground project. …

Hugh Cole School and Papa Gino's Restaurant has teamed up for a one-night fundraiser benefiting the local school. From 4 to 9 pm on Friday, Feb. 3, Papa Gino's located at 623 Metacom Ave., has promised to give Hugh Cole School 20 percent of the sales made by families, friends, and supporters of the school. According to the Hugh Cole PTO, The money will be used to benefit the school's playground fund. A copy of the fundraising flyer must be presented at the time of purchase for Hugh Cole to receive a percentage of the sale. To obtain a copy of the flyer, please email Erin Alves at ealvespto@aol.com. The fundraiser offer is available only on dine-in and carry-out orders.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playground was held on Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday morning, Hugh Cole preschool students flocked to the school's newly built playground to climb, slide, and run off their energy. The playground, which is just phase one of the school's playground extension project, has been a year in the making. "In the spring of 2010 we collaborated with the parents group because we knew with addition of more students, we would need to extend our playground and to build a playground that the preschool students could use," said parent Tara Thibaudeau. "We really needed an age appropriate playground for them." It was perfect weather for Hugh Cole's annual Field Day.
Students at Hugh Cole Elementary School had a ball on Wednesday morning for their annual Field Day event. Fifth grade students ran games for the younger students including Parachute Toss, Obstacle Course, Baseball, Crazy Throwing, Sack Race, Duck Duck Goose, Scoops, Egg on a Spoon, Shark Tag, 3-Legged Race, Wheelbarrow Race, Hurdles and Jump Rope. Some parents and family members joined in on the fun, while the Warren Fire Department served up a cook-out for everyone.
