The Inequity and the Injustice of the Proposed Sakonnet Bridge Toll

Tiverton Roger A. Bennis writes that new tolls would be 'robbing Peter to pay Paul' — placing a burden on Sakonnet Bridge travelers to benefit users of three other local bridges.

To the Editor: I have followed the news articles on the hardships that the Sakonnet Bridge Tolls would have upon businesses and people traveling to and from Aquidneck Island, and found them to be both an interesting foray into normally unexplored regions of investigative reporting, and a lack of understanding of the total impact of the proposed toll.  While it is interesting to investigate the hardships that the toll would impose, it should also be recognized that tolls in general are a tax burden that, like all tax burdens, will be a hardship upon many people. All taxes should be investigated to determine if benefits justify the hardships; or more accurately if benefits and the spread of benefits to recipients - justify hardships and …

Finn 'Open to Discussion' on Gun Bill

In a letter to the editor, Finn address the concern and criticism of the gun registration bill she introduced last month.

[Editor's note: The following letter was submitted by Rep. Linda Finn (D-Dist. 72, Middletown, Portsmouth) regarding the gun registration bill, 5573, that would require gun owners to register their weapons with local police.  The controversial proposal drew hundreds to the State House last month to speak up against the bill.] I have received many responses from concerned citizens, both gun owning and not. I would like to clarify a couple of items and respond to some of the criticism of the bill.         Please remember that at this point, this bill is still only a proposal. In order for it to become law, a House committee must first hear it. That hearing before the House Judiciary Committee is open to all to testify about their opinions…

Letter: Ottiano Reflects on Start of Session

The two-term state Senator, representing Bristol, Portsmouth, and Tiverton, offers his thoughts on the opening of the 2013 General Assembly.

To the editor: It was an honor to be sworn in for a second term as state senator for District 11. The district includes all of Portsmouth, downtown Bristol and now the central portion of Tiverton, which is included due to redistricting. The first part of the legislative session from January 1 to February 14 is underway. This time is mostly dedicated to crafting and submitting legislation. There seems to be a re-energized statewide attitude towards looking closely at how the business atmosphere and climate for job creation can be maximized. The Senate is fresh off an economic summit, and I am very optimistic that several bills I am involved with can help the state reach our end goal of a better overall economy. The Senate leadership …

It's imperative that the tolls on Sakonnet NOT be implemented. It will be devastating to the East Bay community. If the state needs extra money I suggest the Governor and General Assembly cut their pay by 10%   more ›

Letter: Two Years To Win Your Trust

State representative-elect promises to work on making community stronger and prouder.

With the elections fully behind us, I felt the need and obligation to first and foremost thank the entire Bristol and Warren community for utilizing their Constitutional right to vote. Please thank a veteran for that right. Every day I have tried to respect your opinion via your voices and words, and recognize that every two years your vote represents your feelings. Having accepted the results, I would like to publicly announce that I believe that this election has enriched me personally by gaining a better appreciation for the political race, but more importantly, the benefit of having met a new Bristol family and friend in my competition, Michael Donahue. I realized early on that both he and Warren's John Hanley were in the race for …

Letter: Help! There's A Cat Stuck in My Tree!

A letter to the editor asking for help getting a cat out of a resident's tree.

Yesterday the Warren Fire Department braved an effort to rescue a standed cat to no avail. Tower 1 was seen, expertly manned by it's crew of firefighters, towering over my little cottage home on Wheaton Street. The MISSION: to save a little black and white kitty perched high (about 25 feet high) in an ole' maple tree. The kitty, who I now named "ROCKY" was first spotted atop the tree around 10 am Friday morning. I still don't know who chased the little kitty up the tree BUT, he seemed to be OK yet petrified. On that same morning, I called Heidi Garrity (Warren's very own Animal Control Officer) and she arrived and assessed the situation. After her visual she commented that the kitty appeared to be scared BUT in good condition and was NOT …

Letter: Warren Council Must Hold the Line or Face Dire Consequences

A letter to the editor from Warren Council President Chris Stanley.

Every year, against an ominous backdrop, the Town of Warren’s budget cycle quickly gathers lightning speed. The Town Council, keenly aware of the mounting economic problems and concerns, sits down in its chambers laboring to build a municipal budget in front of an audience of virtually no one. The second floor of the Town Hall should be full of sound and fury; instead the only voices we hear are our own. Alarmingly, the final budget simply slips through the fingers of our electorate at the annual Town Financial Meeting by default. To hit our financial targets, drastic surgery was required of this year’s municipal budget, and the council members plunged our scalpels deeply into Warren’s operational budgets with no one to bear witness to the…

Sarah, seeing as he won't answer me and didn't at the JFC meeting, can you find out why Warren presented a powerpoint presentation showing a 50% increase in their municipal budget yet complained the school budget is killing them. The school budget only increased 20% over the same time frame.   more ›

Interesting quote from article by Jim Baron, Southern RI newspapers: The NPV people are trying to enlist states into an agreement to allocate all of their electoral votes to whichever candidate gets the most popular votes nationwide, regardless of how the citizens in that state voted. So if this bogus “compact” had been in effect in 2004, when 259,760 Rhode Islanders voted for Massachusetts Sen. …   more ›

Letter: Good Deeds Don't Go Unnoticed at the Soup Kitchen

A Letter to the Editor from Wendy Davis at the Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen.

A dedicated volunteer of the Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen found a surprise this morning when she was sorting through a bag of donated clothing. Hidden in the socks was an envelope with a significant amount of cash and a stack of black-and-white family photos that appeared to be decades old. Other volunteers assisted in tracking down the donor, who was contacted promptly and gratefully claimed their possessions this afternoon. The donor explained that the photos were precious family mementos and irreplaceable. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, everyone was happy. Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen, Bristol

Letter: The 'Tea Party' Flag

A Letter to the Editor from Warren resident Andrea Smiley.

I have spent a few hours the last 2 Saturday's attending the Town of Warren budget workshops. Budgeting is not an easy task - especially when funds are limited and costs are rising. We all know this - as we are all facing the same task in our homes. I would like to commend the Town Council members  for asking tough questions of Department Heads and thank you to the Town Manager and Department heads for looking at where you can make cuts without sacrificing critical services. The purpose of the budget workshop is to look at the budget. At the March 3 workshop - the Town Planner, Caroline Wells, thought it was appropriate to voice her opinion on flying the 'tea' party flag at the fire station after Chief Galinelli presented his budget …
