Mt. Hope High School Hosts Free Flu Clinic Today

The Rhode Island Department of Health has scheduled a free clinic from 4 to 7 pm.

  With the recent surge in people seeking flu shots, Thursday night's scheduled free flu clinic at Mt. Hope High School in Bristol may be just in time for lots of local residents. The Rhode Island Department of Health, which has been holding free flu shots at schools around the state for the past several weeks, will set up shop in the high school cafeteria from 4 to 7 pm. Health officials recommend shots for children six months and older, teens up to 19 years old, pregnant women, and seniors 50 and older. HEALTH Declares Flu to Be Widespread in Rhode Island

Surgical masks now required for all unimmunized healthcare workers.

The following information was provided by the Rhode Island Department of Health Michael Fine, MD, director of the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH), has issued a Declaration of Widespread Flu Incidence Statewide. Health Dept. Shuts Down Daily Bread

The former Bristol Bakery was hit with several health violations, the state Department of Health reported Friday.

Customers are advised not to eat anything from Daily Bread after the Rhode Island Department of Health shut down the bakery Friday for multiple health violations. The Health Department cited multiple violations during an Office of Food Protection inspection. The bakery at 87 Gooding Ave., formerly known as Bristol Bakery, failed to correct several violations from a previous inspection and new violations were also cited during the follow-up inspection, the Health Department reported Friday afternoon. Bacteria Closes Bristol Town Beach

The state Department of Health ordered Bristol Town Beach closed Wednesday.

The Department of Health has closed Bristol Town Beach to swimming due to high bacteria counts. The beach, at 50 Asylum Road, will remained closed until further notice, along with Newport's Third Beach and King Park Beach, and Warwick's Goddard Memorial State Park Beach. Officials will continue to monitor the water quality and recommend re-opening when the areas are safe for swimming. Water quality analysis is conducted by the Health Department laboratory or a state certified laboratory.   Beach status may change on a daily basis. For up-to-date information about swimming at Rhode Island beaches, visit www.health.ri.gov/beaches or for recorded information about Rhode Island bathing beaches, call 401-222-2751.

Poll: Should the Government Rule on Sugary Drinks?

Most of us are aware that regular sodas and juices are full of sugar. Some of us avoid them altogether. Others practice moderation. Some say "so what?" and drink away. Starting today, the RI Department of Health wants to wake up that last group. The department is launching a "Cut Back the Sugar" campaign aimed at educating residents about the consequences of drinking full-sugar beverages. It hopes to encourage them to consume water and low-calorie drinks instead. Similar efforts are underway across the country. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health launched its own sugary beverage campaign about a week ago. Officials in the state of New York and in Washington DC have tried to add a tax to sugar-sweetened beverages in the past…

Warren Town Beach Closed to Swimming

The RI Department of Health has closed the beach to swimmers due to high bacteria counts.

The Rhode Island Department of Health recently announced that the Warren Town Beach is closed to swimming due to high bacteria counts. According to the release, officials will continue to monitor the water quality and will recommend re-opening when the areas are safe for swimming. Currently, the following beaches are also closed:
