Rhode Island was chosen along with 10 other states and the District of Columbia on August 24, 2010 to participate in the Race to the Top initiative. According to the Department of Education website, the mission of Race to the Top is to prepare students for college, careers and life. The site also states that the initiative is based on the belief that if schools have effective teachers and leaders and the educators receive continuous and effective support to work based around student needs, students will excel and graduate ready for success.
