Facebook Page Created to Oppose Sakonnet Bridge Tolls

The page's message seeks effort to fight "this shortsighted tax on our communities."

Opposition continues to build in the East Bay against proposed tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge. The latest effort happened Monday, when the "No Tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge" Facebook page launched. The administrator, Christy Nadalin of Bristol, said Thursday she's looking to make everyone aware of the situation. As of 5 p.m. Thursday the page had 25 "likes." Currently, Gov. Lincoln Chafee's budget calls to transfer ownership of the Sakonnet River Bridge from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation(RIDOT) to the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RIBTA). In a move to create a new revenue stream for fiscally-strapped Rhode Island, putting tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge has been proposed if RITBA maintains it. …

Rep. Morrison Introduces Bill To Dissolve Turnpike and Bridge Authority

The bill would place the new Turnpike and Bridge Division under the direction of an assistant director at DOT.

The Rhode Island General Assembly recently announced a new piece of legislation introduced by Rep. Richard Morrison. The bill would essentially dissolve the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority and move all of its projects to be handled by a division of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. The following is the official release from the Rhode Island General Assembly: If shrinking government and making it more efficient can save taxpayer money, Rep. Richard P. Morrison (D-Dist. 68, Bristol, Warren) has a suggestion about where to start. He has introduced legislation that will dissolve the quasi-public Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, moving all its duties and functions to the RI Department of Transportation in a …

This is more about Rep. Morrison keeping tolls off the Mt Hope Bridge than anything. If he were sincere, he's realize that the bridges that RITBA care for are in good shape, with ongoing maintenance, and the maintenance is paid for. As a quasi-public entity, they are less apt to be pushed around by the short-sighted, self-serving clowns on Smith Hill. On the other hand, DOT bridges are dangerous…   more ›

Bridge Authority Adds Toll Hearings in Newport, Jamestown

The meetings follow two this week in Bristol and Portsmouth.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) announced today that it will hold two additional public hearings this month to continue its conversation with the public about its revenue needs and tolling options. RITBA held its first session Wednesday night in Bristol, where approximately 100 residents came out, many to express displeasure with a proposal to add tolling back to the Mt. Hope Bridge. Another session is being held tonight at 7 p.m. at Portsmouth High School. The additional meetings will be at the following locations: At the Bristol meeting last night, RITBA Chairman David Darlington discussed the reality that the tolls on the Pell Bridge are the authority's only source of revenue. According to Darlington, they don't …

Portsmouth Business Development Director Blasts Proposed Bridge Tolls

Bill Clark, business director, says tolls would create "a burden on commuting employees."

I am unable to attend this evenings hearing in Portsmouth on tolls for the Mt. Hope Bridge. I voice a strong disapproval of placing new tolls on the bridge. By far the majority of the traffic on the bridge is related to commuters to and from work and business related travel (55% + 8%).  Aquidneck Island has been and will no doubt always be a daily importer of employees. This places a burden on commuting employees and adds to difficulties employers face in hiring. It adds to the costs of deliveries of materials and supplies.    We are especially sensitive to the issues it creates for our valuable business base of marine companies (43 marine companies in Portsmouth) and defense (Raytheon and sub-contractors) and tech related (Portsmouth …

Nearly 630 bridges in the state. How about 630 tolls on those bridges so everyone is paying their fair share? In 1991 the state started paying the entire bill for the Central Falls school system and still is. The new fair funding formula will strip away over $9 million in funding from Bristol and Warren schools. That very same formula applied the very same way shows that Central Falls can afford…   more ›

State Proposes 52-Cent Toll to Cross Mt. Hope Bridge

According to a Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority plan, out-of-state drivers would pay $2.50 to cross the Mt. Hope Bridge.

If you use an EZ Pass to cross the Mt. Hope Bridge, it could cost you 52 cents per trip soon. If you don't, it could cost you $3.25 per trip soon. Those are the options on the table, as revealed during a public hearing Wednesday night at Jacky's Galaxie restaurant in Bristol. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority hosted a public forum to answer questions and hear from people upset by the idea of paying money to cross Narragansett Bay between Bristol and Portsmouth. Turnpike and bridge authority board Chairman David Darlington reassured residents that the board "has not made a decision about retolling the Mt. Hope Bridge." However, he did admit that tolls, whether they are collected on the Mt. Hope Bridge or the Pell Bridge in …

We will take control in 2012 Tony. In the meanwhile the bridges continue to rust away. You were not getting the taxes from fuel before the wars. There is no money anyplace. I guess I could refuse my military retirement. Maybe even my SS monthly payments. I could even give up my Textron retirement, but I need you to send me a large stipend out of your paycheck so I can continue to live the life I …   more ›
