Warren Store Features Fair Trade Gifts Alongside Valentine Bouquets

The Greenery in Warren sells handcrafted gifts with a conscience.

It all started 10 years ago with a found wallet. Bridget Tierney, who was living in New York at the time and working as a theater electrician, found the wallet and sent it back to it's owner. Shortly thereafter she received a thank you note and a bracelet with a tag that read “Fair Trade.” Curious, Tierney decided to visit the Brooklyn gift shop where the bracelet was purchased. “It was a great, artsy shop,” she said. “I thought, this is what I want to do. It’s perfect.”  A decade later, those same Fair Trade bracelets are sold in Tierney’s gift and floral shop, The Greenery, in Warren. Needing a change of scenery, Tierney moved the store to Warren this past Fall from its original location in Scituate. “I love Warren and I didn’t really …

Warren's New Children's Shop on the Block

Children's consignment shop, Luca, opened this week in Warren.

Do not be confused by the wide spacious room where sunshine streams through large windows casting light over row upon row of organized clothing. Luca is definitely a consignment shop, just not the usual dark and cramped space where customers are meant to sort and sift for hours. “I wanted to get away from the typical consignment shop where you feel the walls are closing in,” said owner Diane Jennings. Luca officially opened this week in Warren. The shop specializes in children’s consignment from newborns to teens, and carries maternity items as well. Typical of most consignment stores, prices reflect less than 50% of an item’s original sale price. Jennings prefers small designers and organic clothes to mainstream brands in order to “appeal…

Bristol and Warren Shops Look Back on 2010

Some of last year's openings, closings and downsizing in Bristol and Warren.

Retail stores in Bristol and Warren experienced the highs and lows of an undulating economy in 2010. “Just based on observation, some did well while others didn’t,” said Betty Pleacher of the East Bay Chamber of Commerce. “I’m not sure what the rhyme or reason to it is.” In Bristol, several stores closed, including Striper Moon, Northwind Sports and Studio 6, while A Novel Idea downsized to a new space and Bristol Looms closed the retail portion of their business. But folks at Gallery Eleven Fine Art, which opened right before Thanksgiving in the old Striper Moon space, say they are doing well. “We’ve had wonderful traffic,” says artist and partner Kris Donovan. “There were twenty-six people in last Sunday. For January, that’s great. We’re…

Warren and Bristol are great destination spots for resale shoppers. Whether you enjoy digging through bargains for a unique treasure or searching a collection of designer pieces for a discounted price, our local secondhand shops offer something for everybody's price range and sensibility.  In addition to the multiple thrift and consignment shops that have been here for a number of years, at least five new resale stores have opened since 2008 keeping us on par with a nationwide trend. According to the Association of Resale Professionals, the industry has grown approximately 7% per year in the past two years due to value-minded and environmentally-sensitive consumers . Resale stores run the gamut. Some are boutiques with selective …

'Tis the Season to Shop Locally

Bristol's Holiday Preview was a glowing success.

The drop in temperature was favorable for downtown Bristol last night as shoppers got into the holiday spirit for the Ninth Annual Holiday Preview sponsored by the Downtown Bristol Merchants Association and the Bristol Independent Galleries. On the streets and in the shops, the mood was vibrant and festive. Hundreds of revelers, guided by the warm glow of luminaria, visited local businesses and street vendors to enjoy cider, cocktails, enormous spreads of food and, most assuredly, discounts. On Hope Street, a crowd gathered outside Ardor to view the live fashion models in the window while a nearby Santa served up hot candied nuts straight from the grill. Down the block, Kate & Co. was packed so tightly that folks had to wait their turn to …
