Friday's chilly weather didn't deter those wishing to commemorate Veterans Day.
Captain Joseph P. Voboril of the US Navy, quoted George Orwell during his speech at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol on Friday morning. "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night, only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf," Voboril said. Voboril thanked all of those men and women who stood ready in past wars, and those who continue to do so, as he addressed the assembled guests, many of whom were in wheelchairs and assisted by aides from the Veterans Home. All branches of the US military were represented in the white tents assembled on the Veterans Home grounds, and they were joined by the Mt. Nearly 100 residents attended Warren's annual Veterans Day Ceremony.
Warren's Veterans Day ceremony began with 21 rings of the church bell at the Warren Methodist Church at 11 am, marking the traditional observance time to honor the veterans of the United States military. Master of ceremonies David McCarthy his wife, Judy Fardig, started organizing the event at the Warren Town Common 12 years ago. "For some reason or another the town stopped holding the ceremony so we revived it," McCarthy said. "It's important to have this day to honor those who have put their lives in harms way for us." Bristol and Warren are each hosting a ceremony in honor of Veterans Day.
The towns of Bristol and Warren will be honoring those who have served and who are serving our country with events throughout the morning and afternoon. In Bristol, the Bristol Veterans Council will host an early start to the day's ceremonies with a wreath laying at 8:30 am at the Honor Roll Garden (Veterans Memorial Garden), located next to the Burnside Building in Bristol. A memorial service will follow beginning at 9:30 am at the Veterans Home Chapel where coffee and doughnuts will be served. Veterans Day is Friday and it is a day to honor the men and women who have served in our nation's armed forces. Please participate in our rememberance of those who have served by posting photographs or videos of veterans in your life. Feel free to post photos of veterans from any era, whether it is your great-grandfather who served in a World War or your neighbor's niece who just returned from Iraq. The National Weather Service says residents should expect more fog later tonight and on Thursday. Patchy fog is expected after 7 p.m. tonight with a southeast wind between 3 and 7 mph. More patchy fog is expected Thursday with showers, along with a possible thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Some of the storms Thursday night could produce heavy rainfall. Veterans Day forecast Outdoor Veterans Day ceremonies may also be a little wet before 9 a.m. Friday. A chance of showers is predicted for the morning, while the sun should peak out for the remainder of the day with a high near 53.
