Snow on the Way — But How Much? [UPDATED]

Estimates vary widely on how much snow to expect Friday night.

Update, posted at 4:35 pm on Feb. 6: The National Weather Service out of Taunton has issued a winter storm watch, effective late Thursday night through Saturday afternoon, for Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts. The watch states there is a "very high confidence in over six inches of snow" with a "potential for a foot or more."  Light snow will start Friday morning and increase with intensity as the afternoon unfolds. On the roads, that can lead to icy conditions, as road salt doesn’t work as well in temperatures below 20 degrees — but it’s something to keep in mind on walkways around your home, too. [Keep an eye on updated weather conditions with the Bristol-Warren Patch Weather Page.] You might want to try calcium chloride on your walkways, which works at lower temperatures. You can pick some up at Benny’s or one of the hardware stores listed on the Bristol-Warren Patch Directory. Frozen pipes are another problem — especially for those in older houses. If you have pipes that are near exposed areas, follow the tips below from the Red Cross: Water has a unique property in that it expands as it …
