Federal Officials: 'Time to Act is Now'

The state will undoubtedly experience strong weather conditions as federal officials declare Sandy's landfall to be anywhere from Delaware to RI.

Federal emergency management and weather officials said Sunday that the time for preparing for Hurricane Sandy is rapidly coming to an end, and that Rhode Island is potentially in the storm's crosshairs. "The time for preparing and talking is about over," said Craig Fugate, adminstrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "People need to be acting about now." Hurricane Sandy is expected to affect as many as 50 million people as it makes its westward turn toward the East Coast. While the most recent maps show the center of the storm tracking toward New Jersey, forecasters are hesitant to pinpoint a specific area for landfall. Chafee Declares State of Emergency

There is a high wind watch in effect Monday morning through Monday night.

Sunday 12:33 p.m. – Governor Chafee has declared a state of emergency today, and he will be on a conference call with other governors and President Obama later today. He said a decision on canceling schools, work and evacuating will be left to individual communities, after he had a conference call with town managers and mayors. He said a decision whether to cancel the day for state workers will be made later today by his office. According to Kevin McBride of the Rhode Island National Guard, already there are 2,100 National Grid employees stationed and on-call in anticipation of power outages.
