10 Ways To De-Stress During the Holidays

Feeling overwhelmed this season? Check out the list below for ways to stay healthy and have fun.

It’s that time of year again: the holiday season. There are gifts to buy, parties to attend, family to visit and it all happens around your existing crazy schedule.  This can be a time for joy and celebration but it can also be a time when people experience sadness, anxiety, stress and exhaustion. Here are 10 ways to stay healthy this holiday season: 1. With the exception of one night a week, stick to the same sleep schedule. Don’t try to make up for lost sleep by sleeping late. Instead, try to nap once or twice during the day for 15 minutes. Drink lots of water or other vitamin infused drinks. Use cold compresses on your eyes to decrease swelling and increase brightness. 2. Set a limit for gift giving and stick to it. Use cash as much as…

SOUND OFF: Should Hasbro Make a 'Gender Neutral' Easy-Bake Oven?

Some top-named chefs and a New Jersey girl are leading the fight for gender-equality in children's toys. What do you think about this issue?

The Easy-Bake Oven has been a favorite childhood toy since it was first introduced by the company Kenner in 1963, but a new campaign is advocating for this toy to be made in colors suitable for both girls and boys.  New Jersey resident McKenna Pope, age 13, wants to see the toy's current manufacturer offer the Easy-Bake Oven in more "gender neutral" colors.  Pope will meet with the toy's manufacturers, Rhode Island-based toy maker Hasbro, and advocate this idea, reports The Providence Journal.  The Easy-Bake Oven is currently only offered in pink and purple. Pope would like to see the toy oven also made in colors suitable for boys.  She's not alone in the campaign. Celebrity chefs Bobby Flay, Manuel Trevino and other chefs are backing …

The truth is that if my son wanted to cook with his sisters easy-bake oven and it was PINK intead of blue...he would play with the oven....no questions. It is up to the way parents bring up thier children as to whether it is an issue or not. If they made a gray oven...ok but if a 4 year old wanted to use it, he would use it...without worrying about the color.   more ›

Tell Us: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

You might be surprised at the results of a poll on the subject.

Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays? It's a question that's been swirling around Rhode Island for a year, since Gov. Lincoln Chafee uphelp state tradition by calling the Statehouse evergreen a "Holiday Tree" instead of a "Christmas Tree," in an attempt to be inclusive of all faiths. Those unaware that previous governors have routinely referred to it as a "Holiday Tree" protested, going so far as to picket the tree lighting last year. No such protest took place this year — perhaps because of Chafee's last-minute lighting ceremony. But the tree again sparked the question of which holiday greeting is best. When it comes to season’s greetings, a new poll shows the majority of Americans prefer “Merry Christmas” to “Happy Holidays.” According to …

Show Off Your Favorite Ornament

We're looking for photos of the most unique, quirky, or memorable trinkets that you hang on your tree for the holidays.

Holiday decorations do more than glitter and sparkle — they give a hint about the personality of their owners. Whether it's a trinket showing loyalty to a favorite sports team, cartoon character, or store ornaments run the full range of sizes, shapes, and colors. And when it comes time to deck out the tree, it's the ornament that gets the best spot — the perfect place for the ornament to function as a conversation starter. Other folks prefer original, handmade decorations — especially if they were created by the kids when they were younger. Whatever the style, one thing's for sure: favorite decorations are unique. Here's your chance to share photos [or video] of the most unique decoration you keep on your tree. Post your photos and video …

Holiday Foods on the 'Nice' List

Enjoy these snacks during the busy holiday season.

The following text was provided by the Dana Farber Cancer Institute: The holidays are here and so is all the festive food. Some of it is naughty but much of it can be nice. “When party planning during the holidays, it’s important to have variety,” says Stacy Kennedy, MPH, RD, CSO, LDN, a nutritionist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. “Many of the foods we enjoy around the holidays are not only delicious to eat, but they may also contain cancer-fighting nutrients.” Kennedy says it’s easy to include them in any menu when you know what to look for. Here is a list of foods and recipes from Kennedy and her colleagues that belong on anyone’s “nice list.” Ho-ho hummus Skip those holiday dips that are buried in excess fat and calories. …

Do You Have 'Charity Fatigue?'

From the ubiquitous red kettles to the option to round up to the nearest dollar at the register, there are many requests for consumers' charity this season.

It's rare to go through a checkout line without being asked for a donation. At PetSmart it's for animals; at Wendy's it's for adoption; at the Dollar Tree Store it's toys for military kids. And, let's not forget the jingle of the Salvation Army bell that sends many of us digging into our pockets. It's true, needs are increasing yearly. One viewpoint is that if you're out shopping anyway, parting with an extra dollar here and there likely has little affect on your wallet—and if others do the same, the sum of all the small donations can make a big difference.  But how do you decide when your donations are enough? Do you have to give each time to feel like you've helped? How do you walk through the cold past that kettle and the ringer of the…

This has been going on since I was a kid. Were talking over 50 years ago. The only difference is back then, when you donated to any cause you received a nice tag that said you did, and you would put this tag on your clothing and as you went about shopping the same group at another store would see the tag and not ask for a donation. I believe that all groups that are asking for money, to please …   more ›

Share Your Holiday Pet Photos

Upload your photo here to share your cute getups with your neighbors.

Sure, Halloween offers a limitless variety of costume ideas for your dog or cat (or teacup pig?), but nothing that offers the cuteness of your pet with a Christmas tree, a Santa hat and a string of multi-colored lights. Or even with the Big Guy himself. Did you make your pet sit, uncomfortable and annoyed, for a few minutes while you took photos for a greeting card or just for fun? Share your photos here with the rest of Bristol-Warren and comment below on your favorites.
