Warren Basketball Club Coach Charged With Possessing Child Pornography

RI State Police arrest Pawtucket man who is coach, organizer of RI Hawks AAU basketball club.

A coach for a youth basketball club based in Warren has been charged with possession of child pornography, according to the RI State Police. He will be re-arraigned in Sixth District Court tomorrow, Nov. 18. 

Jason (Jay) Elliott, 41, of Pawtucket, was arrested last Friday, Nov. 15, by members of the Crimes Unit/Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and held overnight at State Police Headquarters. He is listed as a coach on the RI Hawks basketball program website, which reports its address as 1 Kenyon Lane, Warren.

Elliott was arraigned on Saturday, Nov. 16, by a bail commissioner. He set bail at $50,000 surety with conditions that Elliott not be allowed to have access to the Internet or be in contact with minors.

Elliott was taken to the Adult Correctional Institutions after he did not post bail. The penalty for possessing child pornography is a fine up to $5,000 or imprisonment for up to 5 years or both, according to the State Police. 

The State Police investigation started when a clinical social worker notified the task force about Elliott’s activities, according to the State Police. Officers went to Elliott’s home and seized digital media of child porn that allegedly belonged to him.

Elliott was described by State Police as a coach and organizer of the basketball club. The Hawks sponsor teams for boys from grades 5 to 12.

The State Police are asking that anyone with information that could help them in this case should call the Computer Crimes Unit/ICAC Task Force at 401-444-1710.
